Overview

Ricky Fanté may be a newcomer to the contemporary R&B scene, but his gritty, old-school vocals suggest classic soul men like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Wilson Pickett -- so much so that the Washington, D.C. native was tapped to portray the wicked Pickett on the NBC musical drama, American Dreams. While the 26-year-old's peers are busy mining the '70s soul gold of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Fanté revives the hand-clapping, hip-shaking genre launched in the great Motown/Stax era of the '60s. Co-written by Grammy-winning songwriter Jesse Harris -- who penned the Norah Jones smash "Don't Know Why" -- Rewind is packed with vintage soul-reminiscent originals, including the aching "I Let You Go," the road trip anthem "Drive," and the funky "My Song." From start to finish, Rewind harkens back to a kinder, gentler era when feel-good R&B helped soothe the soul. Anna Powell

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Chris Nickson
On the surface, this sounds fine. Fanté sings like the lost child of Otis Redding, and the songs are so retro you could slip them into an oldies station without many people being any the wiser, although there's calculation behind this album. With neo-soul increasing in popularity, he'll doubtless find an audience among both the hipsters and the boomers to lap this music up. Although it's not the real thing, Rewind has all the right notes in all the right places.
Entertainment Weekly
Rewind is a tribute to '60s R&B, replete with jabbing horns and rollicking organ. [B] Cheo Tyehimba
Vibe - Tom Terrell
Ricky Fante's debut, Rewind, takes the road less traveled -- the grittier, bumpier one paved by Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.
