Perk Up Your Ears!

TaDAAAAA! Here at looong last is the impatiently awaited release of RHINOCEROS TAP, Sandra Boynton's first book/recording set—completely redesigned, and now with a spiffy CD instead of a cranky old cassette tape. (Cassette tapes are SO Last Millenium)

The terrific musical theater actor Adam Bryant performs with zest and subtlety these 15 unpredictable original songs. This exuberant set is the perfect companion volume to the #1 national bestseller, Philadelphia Chickens.

With lyrics and pictures by Boynton and music written with and played by the one and only Michael Ford (actually, there are probably quite a few Michael Fords, but this one is a really good musician), these songs have the style, swing, charm, and pizzazz that little listeners deserve.

Read along! Sing along! Oink along! Or maybe just listen.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 4Best-selling greeting card artist Sandra Boynton expands her repertoire with this wonderfully zany collection of songs for children. Lyrics by Boynton and musical composition by Boynton and Michael Ford have produced such toe-tapping numbers as the Big Band style "Rhinoceros Tap"; a traditional sailor song in which the sailor piggies sing about their captain; a calypso tune in which a moose sings about how much more he likes Alaska than the sandy tropics; the square-dance style "Barnyard Dance" ("Bow to the horse/ Bow to the cow/ Twirl with the pig/if you know how"); a mousy love song, "I Love You More Than Cheese"; and several other equally whimsical numbers incorporating rock, blues, doo-wop, and traditional rounds. Adam Bryant does a magnificent job singing each of the ditties, accompanied by professional instrumentalists on keyboards and synthesizers. The lyrics in the book are accompanied by generous color illustrations of Boynton's trademark hippos, piggies, dogs, cats, mice, barnyard animals, etc. At the back of the book are simple scores for each song, including the melody line in the treble clef and chord markings. Children and adults will enjoy listening to the songs over and over, while pouring over the lyrics and illustrations in the book.-Beverly Bixler, El Paso Public Library, TX

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, writer, and songwriter. Since 1974, Boynton has written and illustrated over forty children’s books and seven general audience books, including four New York Times bestsellers. More than 60 million of her books have been sold—“mostly to friends and family,” she says. She has also written and produced five albums of award-winning children’s music. Three of her albums have been certified Gold, and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, is nearing Platinum. She lives with her family on a farm in New England.

Michael Ford, Sandra Boynton’s esteemed collaborator on Philadelphia Chickens and Rhinoceros Tap, is a classically trained composer and pianist, with a long detour in Progressive Rock performance. He and his family live down the road a spell from Sandy.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)
