Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Jan Chapman
Elyse despises Valentine's Day. It is the day that customers flood into the card shop where she works looking for silly, sentimental gifts. It is also the day, one year ago exactly, that her ex-boyfriend broke up with her. To add to the general misery, her father has dumped her mother for a younger woman, leaving Elyse and her mother to try to find their way. Still, Elyse has her best friend, Dina, who has also been dumped by an ex-boyfriend. Things begin looking up when a cute boy named Patrick shows up at the store. Elyse sees him as the perfect antidote to Dina's romantic malaise. Trouble is, Patrick turns out to be her new next door neighbor, and the more she gets to know him, the more she begins to worry that her unexpected feelings for him might get in the way of her plan to bring Dina happiness. Although it features high school characters, the book really seems more suited to middle school readers. Dina plans a "save the panda" party with stuffed animals and childish party games—a rather unlikely party for an older teen to host. The romance in the story does not stray beyond a kiss, and the improbably wonderful Patrick is straight from a young teen fantasy. The novel is written in a pleasantly humorous fashion, which will be appealing to teen readers, and it is adequately constructed except for an occasional plot hole. Also, the first-person voice is obviously that of an adult attempting to write as a teen. Still, teens looking for a light romantic confection should be pleased with this book. Reviewer: Jan Chapman
Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
Elyse and her mom move to a new town, which is actually a good thing. Both get a new start, and Elyse will not have to endure her ex-best friend snuggling with her ex-boyfriend in every school hallway. The one-year anniversary of Elyse's discovery of her now-exes change in loyalty is commemorated by the world with chocolates, hearts, and singing cupid dolls. It would be easier to ignore St. Valentine's Day if she did not work at a mall gift store, but she and her mom need the money. Obviously after the love-turned-betrayal, Elyse has sworn off dating, and would love to add learning to drive to the off-limits list. As luck would have it, the cute boy next door Patrick is now Elyse's driving teacher, and may be changing her mind about her dating status. Elyse tries to focus her interest in Patrick by setting him up with her perky coworker Dina, but the more her plan seems to be working, the less happy she is about it. This is a cute teen romance that is comfortably predictable, and happily embraces the reader with familiarity, humor, and a sarcastic eye roll regarding all things Valentine's Day. Elyse hates Valentine's Day ever since last year when her ex-boyfriend broke her heart and stole her best friend. Unfortunately for her, she works at a mall store complete with Valentine cards, chocolates, and singing cupid dolls. When a cute boy comes into the shop, she encourages her friend to flirt with him. Belong long, she realizes that the boy in question is her next-door neighbor and he has a crush...on her. But Elyse isn't interested in him or any other boy. The more she pushes Dina and Patrick together, though, the more she notices that something isn't right. Could she be giving love a second chance? RHYMES WITH CUPID is a cute read and perfect for this time of year. I loved the banter between Elyse and Patrick. Patrick is always getting things wrong, awkward when talking to girls, smart, and very caring. Elyse is still overcoming her grief, blunders her way through several situations, but just wants the best for her friend. A truly sweet read.

At first, I questioned if I should get this book. I grabbed it at the last minute on impulse and am so glad I did! The book is romantic and funny and has relatable characters. It's not your average love story mainly because the main character,Elyse, wants to stay away from love at all costs. She's independent and stubborn, which makes the story that much better. I would definitely recommend this book!
