Overview

There have generally been more good vintage R&B Christmas recordings made -- or at least Christmas music that's easier for hipsters to take -- than holiday records made in other genres. But while Rhythm & Blues Christmas does concentrate on early R&B, with some blues and soul as well, it's limited in scope to items from catalogs of labels controlled by the company responsible for this CD reissue, Ace Records. As a consequence, the majority is taken from the vaults of the Modern and Combo label, and there's a pronounced tilt toward R&B recorded in Los Angeles. There are a few big names here (B.B. King, Lowell Fulsom, Jesse Belvin) and a couple lower-tier R&B stars (Little Willie Littlefield, Hadda Brooks), but it's more solid than great, often with the kind of lively but somewhat generic small-combo 1950s-styled R&B sound common to Los Angeles indie labels of the period. There aren't any classics here, even when judged solely against the standards of Christmas R&B tunes. It's OK filler for your holiday party CD rack, however, with some range, spanning jump blues-flavored doo wop (the Voices' "Santa Claus Boogie") and piano ballad blues to electric guitar-dominated arrangements (B.B. King's "Christmas Celebration"), raw country blues (Sylvester Cotton's "Christmas Blues"), and Fulsom's two-part 1967 single "I Wanna Spend Christmas with You." The most memorable track, however, may be one of the least bluesy, that being Hadda Brooks' subdued "White Christmas," with its ethereal organ.
