Overview

There are plenty of worthy children's singer-songwriters out there, but few exhibit the seemingly effortless mastery of the form that Jessica Harper does. The triple-threat Harper -- a singer-songwriter with a voice as rich as chocolate mousse, an actress who's starred in films like "My Favorite Year" and "The Phantom of the Paradise," and now a children's book author -- pens some of the most strikingly original kids' songs you'll ever hear. RHYTHM IN MY SHOES, her fifth album, brims with delightful fare, showcasing instantly beguiling melodies, arrangement, and lyrics. Harper, who utilizes the contagious beats of reggae and rap, along with those of hipster jazz and toothsome pop, creates a compelling groove throughout. And her lyrics are dazzlingly unconventional; just about every song could stand on its own as a hugely inventive kids' poem. Harper's two school-age daughters serve as frequent inspiration, resulting in tunes like "A Day in the Life of Elizabeth" ("Put on your shoes and the little pink hat and grab that pack. What's for breakfast, what's for lunch, some slurp and crunch and GO, and we're out the door and we're in the car…") Then there's the flippant little nonsense song "Too Much Snow in Tokyo" ("With a fee fi fo, the Eskimo/played the piccolo for the buffalo…"). And if you've ever conversed with a new parent (or remembered your own boasts when your kids were born), you'll recognize the genesis of "My Baby Is A Genius" ("Just look at my baby crawl, /Hey, Mr. Balanchine, I think I see what you mean -- He's on his way to Carnegie Hall!"). Like her other four albums, Harper's RHYTHM IN MY SHOES is one to treasure.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Jessica Harper's fifth children's album, Rhythm in My Shoes, features 13 cheerful, creative tunes made for movement. Harper's rounded, versatile voice lends itself well to the different musical styles the album embraces, including gospel, swing, reggae, and rap. "Girlquake," "My Baby Is a Genius," "I'm Not Going to Chase the Cat Today," and "I Like Where I Am" are some of the highlights from this enjoyable, danceable collection.
