Rhythm of the Voices

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
Samantha Siva showed a lot of creativity and a risk-taking spirit on her debut album, Rhythm of the Voices. Although the CD was recorded after she had moved from her native England to New York, she brings a distinctly British sensibility to her sleek, sometimes jazz-tinged R&B/pop on this generally impressive effort. If you found the '80s and '90s British neo-soul of Loose Ends, Sade and Soul II Soul to be a welcome alternative to the homogenized, formulaic leanings of so much American urban contemporary, you can also appreciate Siva. She's unpredictable, and the singer/composer takes chances on originals that range from the haunting "Whatever You Want," the sexy "Angel," and the evocative title song, to the hypnotic "Mr. Loverboy" and the dreamy, jazz-minded "Sound of Summertime." The adult contemporary ballad "Don't Say Goodbye" and the funky "Just Wait" which Siva co-produced with Timmy Allen are more conventional and less exciting than other songs on the album -- still, they aren't without heart. Rhythm of the Voices wasn't a huge seller, but it indicated that with the right exposure, Siva could make a major impact in the R&B world.
