Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-These titles have accessible writing styles and a broad scope to illuminate the personal and political lives of complicated men governing in complicated times. The two volumes reveal uncanny parallels in the lives of Johnson and Nixon, both of whom had small-town roots, parents who instilled a strong work ethic, relentless ambition, tumultuous terms in Congress, and popular presidencies brought down by crises of their own making. Levy affirms LBJ's legacy as the strongest civil-rights advocate who ever occupied the White House but balances it with his entanglement in the Vietnam quagmire and his ultimate rejection by the American people. Marquez examines Nixon's great achievements in ending the Vietnam War and reaching out to America's Cold War enemies but balances it with the tragedy of Watergate. Both authors do an admirable job of making palatable and comprehensible the complex events that ended the men's political careers and offer insight about their impact on the nation and on the presidency itself. Abundant black-and-white photographs put faces on all of the major players in each president's story. Whether students use the books for report writing or just for supplemental reading, these titles won't disappoint.-William McLoughlin, Brookside School, Worthington, OH
