Richard Petty: The King of Racing

Overview

When a racecar driver wins 27 times in one season-as Richard Petty did in 1967-there's only one way to describe him: The King. By the time he had completed his racing career, he was known as an ageless superstar.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula K. Zeller
Richard Petty was nicknamed "The King" after winning twenty-seven victories in 1967, and the name stuck as he continued to make headlines over his long racing career. This entry in the "Heroes of Racing" series, created for reluctant readers, is targeted to NASCAR fans; however, novices in racing or reading may struggle with some of the book's content. For example, a few terms, such as "black flag" (mentioned on page twenty-eight), are not defined either in the text or in the glossary. Some of the text and boxed factoids use jargon or have poor sentence structure. Although space is devoted to Petty's personal life, his races dominate the book. Four pages on career statistics and two on career achievements provide further details for interested readers. All quotes in the book come from interviews with others, with each documented in the back matter's chapter notes. One unfortunate newspaper article quote—"People ask you what your epithet would be…I say, just to be remembered"—appears verbatim, unexplained. Photos that appear throughout the text do not always correspond with the events on the surrounding pages. Back matter includes recommended web links and books as well as an index. Reviewer: Paula K. Zeller
