Overview

Great Big Schoolhouse is lovingly remembered by generations of American children whose first day at school was undoubtedly made easier by Scarry’s warm, friendly, and comforting classroom. Huckle’s life changes forever as he joins his classmates on the school bus; meets Miss Honey, his sympathetic teacher; and learns the alphabet, new vocabulary, numbers, the days of the week, and the hours of the day. Of course, there’s recess, show and tell, and
a few unexpected adventures, too! Young readers are welcomed in, as they’re asked to help some of Huckle’s friends answer Miss Honey’s questions.Beautifully produced, this is the perfect gift for any child approaching school age—and the flip side of the dust jacket hides a fun surprise: a Richard Scarry A-Z wall poster.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Huckle heads off for school and plunges into the world so familiar to preschoolers and kindergarteners everywhere. Readers follow him through his activities, learning the alphabet, days of the week, numbers, measurement, shapes, and print. Along the way, the author takes time out to identify objects in the classroom, on the playground, and to describe the helper's duties. The chores of the janitor and a visit to the nurse's office and the library are also included. After such a busy day, Huckle is ready to board the yellow school bus and head for home. This reissue with Scarry's distinctive art, lots of activity filling every page, and every object carefully labeled, will be familiar to little ones and their parents who will fondly remember the original. Readers with copies that are worn out from continuous page turning by little fingers may want to replace those editions with this one. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
