Overview

Meet Sam Cat and Dudley Pig, detectives: They find fingerprints and search for clues. They catch robbers. They delight young readers with their antics! Whenever the criminals strike Richard Scarry’s two endearing animal sleuths are ready to go—and in this treasury they’re out to catch some pie thieves, nab a supermarket shoplifter who finds an ingenious way to sneak out his goodies, and seize the bad guys who swiped some pearls. What kids will love most, though, are the madcap, slapstick-filled pictures; adorable animal characters; and the engaging (but sometimes clueless) heroes who dress up in a hilarious series of disguises.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Trina Heidt
Originally published in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the three stories in this collection are classic Scarry. Seemingly simple, there is always much more going on in the story than initially meets the eye and the ear (if being read aloud). Scarry has crafted clever stories using both text and pictures that encourage children to both listen and watch closely. Readers will find that using their deductive reasoning skills is a must and these stories make that fun and easy. Subtle humor in words and illustrations will have readers engaged and racing ahead of Detectives Sam and Dudley to solve the mysteries. It will also have them returning again and again to see what they might have missed. Even after all these years, these stories are just plain fun to share and are highly recommended. This volume includes "The Great Pie Robbery," "The Supermarket Mystery" and "The Great Steamboat Mystery." Reviewer: Trina Heidt

My grandson loved the stories, following the clues. He had us read it again and again, then acted out following clues to solve a crime.

My 3-year old and 4-year old are both mesmerized by the 3 mysteries in this Richard Scarry book. After becoming experts at finding Lowly Worm and Goldbug, they were ready to go to the next level--looking at the pictures and discovering the solutions to the mysteries with the detective characters. I would heartily recommend this book!
