The city of Butte looks like a cancerous mélange of smoky mine boilers and rudely constructed sheds when newspaperman John Fellowes Hall arrives on a cold spring day in 1892. Butte may be ugly, but it’s the place to get rich. It’s also a city full of stories—perfect for a journalist looking to make a name for himself. As an employee of mining titan William Andrews Clark, Hall becomes a part of the best story of them all: the fight among the Copper Kings.

Butte’s three founding fathers were remarkable men with little in common other than ambition. Marcus Daly, a humble Irish immigrant, led the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. His political rival, the formidable William Andrews Clark, a brilliant but vain businessman, bought himself a United States Senate seat. And Augustus Heinze tried to steal the mines, using lawyers and bribed judges, only to be crushed by the Rockefellers. The mine shaft and courtroom clashes of Butte, Mont.’s copper kings form the backdrop of the initially engaging latest from veteran western novelist Wheeler (Snowbound). In 1892, Butte sits on top of some of the world’s richest mineral deposits, and three men vie to control its wealth: Marcus Daly, who employs only fellow Irish to work in his mines; William Andrews Clark, who insists on being called “Senator” even before he’s bribed his way into office; and F. Augustus Heinze, who exploits mining laws to steal ore. They fuel their feuds with competing newspapers, and Clark hires splashy eastern journalist John Fellows Hall to run his propaganda sheet. His journalistic integrity quickly squashed, Hall transforms the paper into a bestselling scandal sheet, full of gossip, murdered prostitutes, and the predictions of a local psychic. Meanwhile, newly widowed Alice Brophy takes a job rather than another husband, discovers socialism, and becomes a notorious labor agitator. The first half of Wheeler’s novel is lively and fascinating, with the riveting “Red Alice” crying out for a novel of her own. But as the story progresses, characters are sidelined and the narrative loses momentum. The fate of this hill is finally determined miles from Butte, in plodding passages far removed from the novel’s promising beginning. (Dec.)

Wheeler (The Deliverance, 2003, etc.) brings to life robber barons, Irish immigrant miners and lost souls among the trash heaps and bawdy houses, headframes and smelters of 1890s Butte, Mont. Two iron men grow rich as copper, silver and gold are pried from the ground to power the Industrial Revolution. Marcus Daly, a miner who blasted his way to ownership of Anaconda Copper, and William Andrews Clark, a dour and bloodless Scot, war over The Richest Hill on Earth, and the casualties litter Butte, a "battered, filthy, chaotic, ugly city." Miners do the hard work that makes the copper capitalists rich, miners who earn three-and-half dollars a day and die of silicosis, tuberculosis and typhus in the shadow of pristine mountains. Wheeler adds the rapacious Rockefellers and a real-life opportunist named F. Augustus Heinze, but the power within this beautifully researched novel lives through the fictional characters that rage among the pits, sheds, stamp mills and saloons. There is J. Fellowes Hall, a newspaperman imported by Clark to edit his mouthpiece, the Butte Mineral. Clark lusts for an appointment to the U.S. Senate no matter the cost in bribes and "boodlers." There is Slanting Agnes, a "fey woman" who catches flashes of the future. Royal Maxwell, a syphilitic undertaker, finds comfort on Mercury Street, "precinct of the bawds." "Red Alice" Brophy, a Dublin Gulch widow and dollar-a-day washerwoman, grows angry, begins to agitate for socialism and the ouster of corrupt union leader Big Johnny Boyle, earning beatings as a reward. Wheeler's work isn't character study, nor is it a shoot-'em-up, hero-centric tale. It is a mirror to a time and place where copper, for wires, for brass, for war and peace was clawed from the earth by men as disposable as machinery, men left without care or comfort to hide away in the tunnels so they might once more be warm as they cough up their lives. Passionate, intelligently written, thoroughly entertaining historical fiction.

RICHARD S. WHEELER is the author of more than fifty novels of the American West. He holds six Spur Awards and the Owen Wister Award for lifetime contributions to the literature of the West. He lives in Livingston, Montana, near Yellowstone Park, and is married to Sue Hart, an English professor at Montana State University in Billings.
