Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Have you ever felt different from your friends? What did you do about it? There are fat rabbits, skinny rabbits, tall rabbits, and short rabbits. Ricky has two ears, but he looks different than all the other rabbits. Instead of standing up, his right ear flops down. Can he make it straighten out? The other rabbits call him "Flop-ear" and laugh. Only when Ricky hangs upside down do his ears finally straighten. To hold the ear up long-term, Rickey puts a carrot inside his floppy ear, but the other rabbits laugh even harder. He tries bandaging his ears and holding them up with a twig and a string, but nothing seems to work. Finally, Ricky decides, "I never want to see those mean rabbits again!" He visits the doctors, who examine both ears and pronounces them to be perfectly fine and in working condition. Ricky learns that all ears are different, and he grows to appreciate his right ear (even though it hangs down). The rabbits welcome him back and decide to be his friend. Soon Ricky has plenty of friends, and no one seems to notice his floppy right ear anymore. Parents and children will enjoy reading this beautifully illustrated book together, and young readers will take away a valuable life lesson; it is okay to be different. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.
