Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Traci Avalos
In this fantastic title in the "Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot" series, Ricky and his Mighty Robot take on the evil-minded Major Monkey and his Mecha-Monkeys from Mars. When Ricky and his Mighty Robot accidentally break his parents' minivan, they are left to find a way to repay the damage. Little do they know that Major Monkey is also plotting an evil scheme to take over Earth. When Ricky's Mighty Robot goes to Mars to save the space mice from an attack, he is trapped by Major Monkey, and it is up to Ricky to save his best friend. This is a great comic-style chapter book that teaches lessons in friendship and responsibility and will be a hit with younger children. In addition to intriguing pictures, the book also includes a flip action section and a tutorial for aspiring artists to draw the characters. As a second language text, it is a great story to use to work on the present, preterit, and imperfect tenses, with detailed pictures to help students comprehend the story line.

Great Chapter Book for Early Readers

Great book for trading off reading chapters with a new reader, especially one into super heroes. Action is silly and fun. Bad guys comically evil and the two heroes succeed together with teamwork and friendship. Gimmicks, the page flipping action sequences and the learn- to- draw- the- characters section, are exciting and laugh inducing for a five year old.

On the downside, it may lead to the Captain Underpants series by the same author and many discussions about appropriate times for potty talk. But if one can live with the occasional embarrassing moment, it's all in good fun.
