Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Young Riley joins his aunt, uncle, and cousin on a grand voyage exploring Australia's Great Barrier Reef. On board is noted marine biologist Wyland who explains to Riley and readers that the warmer ocean temperatures have caused a decline in algae that provide the nutrients and color to the coral, causing great sections of the reef to turn white. Without the algae, the reef and its ecosystem will disappear. During dives, Riley learns about sea turtles, octopus, and the very dangerous Crown-of-Thorns starfish. Wyland explains that the Triton is the only enemy of the poisonous starfish. Each day the crew tests and monitors water temperatures to better understand how to protect the coral reef. Riley sights a Dugong, a distant and endangered relative of the manatee, and comes closer than he might like to a Great White Shark. Perhaps his most exciting adventure is aiding in the capture of poachers stealing tritons. Once home Riley uses some of his newly gained conservation information to help his family reduce their water consumption. There is a wealth of information within this adventure cum science story with color photos that bring the awesome beauty of the tropical ocean to life. With so much emphasis on global warming and our need to be green, teachers and parents will find much to learn and discuss from the clear and concise information contained within. For readers who enjoy this trip they can join Riley on other adventures in this series. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
