The Hidden History of Canada's First Battle

As the Men Fixed bayonets and came into a tight three-sided square in the middle of the road, the Fenian riflemen opened fire... Private Christopher Alderson of QOR Company 7, Education Department, was shot through the heart while in the square or attempting to enter it. He fell dead in the road ...

Booker realized his error and ordered the men to be redeployed into their previous column formation. As they were manoeuvring under heavy fire back into a column on the road, skirmishers falling back from the front came ploughing through them. Two groups collided, creating a confused mass of men, some dropping under Fenian fire while penned in by snake fences and a low stone wall on the eastern side. A witness later recalled, "A heavy volley struck the column, and I heard a sound which I took to be that of men falling. The column swayed backwards, as I supposed, from the effects of the fire."

Booker panicked and sounded the "retire." In the confusion, the manoeuvring ranks rapidly degenerated into a retreat as Fenian rounds rained down on them. Booker tried to regain control and sounded "reform column" and "advance" when they were hit by another Fenian volley. A childless married labourer, Private William Smith, fell dead. Booker was now completely unnerved. He again sounded the "retire" but now added the urgent signal, "the double." This became a desperate call to retreat: Everyone run for your life!
