PreS-Gr 2 Sewall has enlivened this old cowboy song with a set of illustrations straight out of the Wild West. The first-person narrative recounts the story of a young out-of-work cowboy who's bragging promises to earn him ten dollars if he can break the strawberry roan. The confident young cowpoke soon discovers that the little old horse is a hard bronc to bust. Despite his brave attempt, there's no question who comes out the victor in this showdown. Amidst the book's watercolor-washed pages featuring gold desert and blue sky, Sewall's strawberry roan comes to life. The expert use of action lines and superimposed figures bring to life the wildly cavorting bronc whose personality glints in his eyes. The pictures tell the story every bit as well as the words. The music for this little-known ballad is not included, but, despite this omission, the book will hold appeal for all those young 'uns seeking a good cowboy story.
