Overview

For the big-screen adaptation of Beverly Donofrio's memoir Riding in Cars with Boys, Drew Barrymore portrays the writer, whose journey to adulthood in the '60s was sidelined by a teenage pregnancy. And the Everly Brothers' 1958 hit "All I Have to Do Is Dream" helps to foreshadow the broken dreams of Barrymore's character. Equally effective is the inclusion of songs by girl groups such as the Chiffons (the jubilant "One Fine Day") and the Jelly Beans (the yearning "I Wanna Love Him So Bad") alongside Sonny & Cher's optimistic "I Got You Babe." Reflecting the disintegration of Donofrio's teen marriage and her struggle to rise above her lower-class roots are Skeeter Davis's gorgeously melancholic "End of the World" and Billy Joe Royal's equally catchy "Down in the Boondocks." Champions of happy endings will find comfort in the Five Stairsteps' soul classic "O-o-h Child" (also used to great effect in the gangsta drama Boyz N' the Hood) and Rare Earth's gritty funk-rocker "I Just Want to Celebrate." Riding in Cars with Boys is a musical joyride down the memory lane of '60s and '70s pop.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Appropriately enough for a film that spans two decades in the life of a woman who becomes a mother at 15, the soundtrack to Penny Marshall's Riding in Cars With Boys presents pop highlights from the '60s through the '80s, including the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream," the Five Stairsteps' "O-o-h Child," and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." The Chiffons' "One Fine Day," Skeeter Davis' "End of the World," and Big Brother & the Holding Company's "Piece of My Heart" are some of the other highlights from this entertaining but somewhat predictable collection.
