Overview

The treatment described in this Therapist Guide is teen-friendly patient workbook to be used along with the Riding the Wave Therapist Guide for the effective treatment of panic disorder and agoraphobia in adolescence. Panic disorder often first appears in adolescence, making effective treatment for this age group a priority. Left untreated, panic disorder can severely impair an adolescent's development and functioning. It can put an adolescent at risk for depression and have consequences into adulthood. The program was developed at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and targets patients ages 12-17. It is comprised of 12 sessions to be delivered over an 11-week period. Adolescents learn about the nature of panic and anxiety and how to challenge their panic thoughts. Exposure sessions help them face their fears and stop avoiding situations that cause heightened anxiety. An adaptation chapter addresses how to modify the program for intensive(8 day)treatment, as well as how to tailor the treatment to different ages. Each session includes an optional parent component and an appendix provides handouts for parents. The corresponding workbook is specifically designed for adolescent use, with easy to understand explanations and teen-friendly forms.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM (Columbia College of Missouri)
Description: This client workbook to accompany the Mastery of Anxiety and Panic for Adolescents: Riding the Wave Therapist Guide, by the same authors (Oxford University Press, 2008), focuses on working with adolescents presenting with panic and worry. This easy-to-use workbook strongly reflects the mindset of the adolescent. Therapists and clients alike will find this to be a good fit.
Purpose: The purpose of this workbook and the series is to help both therapists and clients address the treatment of anxiety and panic in adolescents. It follows along with the therapist guide which outlines the panic control treatment for adolescents (PCT-A) which is a specifically designed treatment based on CBT and exposure therapy. This client workbook provides the foundation for a therapeutic alliance.
Audience: Clinicians who work with adolescents will benefit substantially from this book. Clients will enjoy the exercises which have been carefully thought out for them and should maintain their interest throughout the 12-week program.
Features: The workbook complements the therapist guide and takes the adolescent step-by-step through the program and the principles of treatment. The homework assignments emphasize recording one's panic attacks with the provided weekly records, situational exposure records, and my cycle of panic and anxiety. A thoughtful discussion on how to deal with relapse and setbacks is well written and customized for the anxious adolescent. Another standout section is on how to deal with anxious feelings.
Assessment: This workbook will benefit both families and adolescents. It is a welcome addition to a field where adult-based treatment books tend to be the norm.

    Highly recommended

This is perfect for my 14 year old. She can now more understand the hows and whys of her anxiety and depression. It's also helpful for her to explain it to other people.
