Meet the Author

David Derrico was born just north of Miami, Florida, and developed his appreciation for complex moral issues while receiving a degree in philosophy from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He wrote his first novel, Right Ascension, before attending law school at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). Right Ascension was first published by Bookbooters Press in 2000, and garnered its inaugural eBook of the Year Award.

Derrico wrote his second novel, Declination, during law school, while he was probably supposed to be studying. Nonetheless, he graduated, passed the California Bar Exam, and worked as an attorney at a large, international law firm in Los Angeles for several years. While practicing law (all that practice actually made him pretty good at it), he managed to write some short stories and start work on his third novel, The Twiller.

Recently, Derrico retired from his "day job" as a big-firm attorney and moved back to South Florida, where he finished that third novel. The Twiller follows the (mis)adventures of an unlikely hero and his unique companion on a comic romp around the galaxy. Derrico maintains a website with reviews, excerpts, current news, the "Always Write" Blog, and purchasing information for all of his novels and other works at www.davidderrico.com.

I love when I can't put a book down. Right Ascension was one of those kind of books. The plot just keeps going and going without getting hung up on technicalities and also offering some food for thought. My only complaint with this book is that I wanted more. So, I immediately started the sequel, Declination!

This first novel by David Derrico is a solid good read. Well-drawn characters and a straightforward style propel the story as we follow Admiral Daniel Atgard across the universe and back as he confronts multiple alien threats to destroy Earth and all its inhabitants. What will he do? Will honor and conscience prevail? Derrico gives us both suspense and moral questions to consider. Definitely an author to watch.

I have to admit, I don't usually pick science fiction to read, but this book got my attention because of the philosophical and ethical dilemmas it conveyed. I'm glad it did not get too technical or it would have lost my interest. This book is definitely written at a high level - there are some difficult vocabulary words used. The author has a great command of the English language and I appreciate his use of good sentence structure and grammar. I look forward to reading the next one.
