Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As part of the "Spyglass Books" social studies series, this book focuses on the interesting and unique types of housing from grass huts to houseboats. A main point of this book is that people use the materials they have and those that help them cope with living in particular climates. The text is very basic and written with preschoolers and beginning readers in mind. Each page of information is accompanied by a full page, color photograph on the opposing page. A related activity is included at the end of the book. Also included is a glossary, index, a list of more books to read, and web site references to enhance further study. This series would be best put to use in a preschool, kindergarten, or library setting. 2003, Compass Point Books, Ages 3 to 5.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Each clearly written title consists of eight spreads and a simple activity or list of "Fast Facts." People looks at appearances, personalities, mobilities, and ways of communicating. ("There are people with dark skin, with light skin, or with in-between skin.") Home examines various types of dwellings today, including an apartment, a mobile home, a houseboat, and grass or stilt houses. For each one, a definition of that type of house is given, followed by a sentence or two further describing it. ("A houseboat is a boat that is also a house where people can live. A houseboat spends most of the time near land.") Both books have colorful, informative photographs, a one-page glossary, and three further-reading suggestions on related topics. Beginning readers should feel comfortable tackling either title.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
