Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Every town has its problems, but not every town has its own team of mastermind heroes, led by the infamous Riley Mack, a local seventh grader. Inspired by his father who is off serving his country in Afghanistan, Riley Mack believes it is his duty to defend the defenseless and rescue those that need rescuing, and right now it seems that everyone from fifth grade students to pet poodles and even his own mother needs Riley's help. The only problem is he has promised his dad and mom that he would stay well away from Gavin Brown, the police chief's son and the town bully. However, as usual, Gavin Brown seems to be the reason that everyone needs Riley's help, so Riley really has no choice. Along with Mongo the muscles, Briana the actress, Jake the brains, and Jamal the new kid and combination master, Riley sets out to save his fellow citizens; but he may uncover more than he can imagine. This middle reader is a fun, lighthearted read that will keep elementary boys turning the pages. Middle school boys will most likely feel that Riley's talents are too unbelievable and will be less engaged with the novel. The key theme in this novel is really about underdogs triumphing over bullies and about defending those who cannot defend themselves. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
School Library Journal
Gr 5–7—Part mystery, part comedy, part crime caper, this first book in a new series offers some escapist fun. Like his father, an active-duty soldier stationed in Afghanistan, seventh-grader Riley Mack defends "those who cannot defend themselves." With a group of other "known troublemakers," he orchestrates, and carries out, elaborate capers to thwart bullies and seek justice. When a lost dog leads the crew to a cruel puppy mill run by the town's crooked police chief, Riley and his pals must pull off their most difficult and dangerous rescue mission yet. The mood is madcap, with cartoon characters taking part in far-fetched situations. Over-the-top, cheeky dialogue comes fast and furious, to the likely delight of many readers. This sort of goofiness will play well to a read-aloud audience. A briskly plotted tale with a light touch, Riley Mack will please dog lovers and those with a hankering for action mixed with laughs.—Travis Jonker, Wayland Union Schools, MI

    more from this reviewer

I haven't read a middle grade book in years and I probably would

I haven't read a middle grade book in years and I probably wouldn't have until I was asked to review Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers . The title alone got my attention and I'm sure will be even more appealing to the age group it's meant for. I also like the cover, actually that goes for most middle grade books they have no problems keeping book covers original.

Now on to the actual book, I found myself laughing within the first few pages. Tons of smart come backs, funny phrases and innocent fun. Riley Mack and his crew are a great set of characters all with their own individual personalities that Grabenstein really made shine through. Riley and his friends are a group of kids I would have loved to grow up with. They are all about doing what is right, standing up to the bullies and the younger kids really looked up to them.

As far as the bad guys you had your bully, bank robbers, a grandma who ran a puppy mill, a banker with a gambling problem and Police Chief Brown who was one crooked cop. Hopefully there is a book two to this series in which Chief Brown gets what he deserves also.

Overall I had a blast reading this with tons of laugh out loud moments. If you have kids who are between ages 8-12 or if you are still a kid at heart and enjoy a good fast paced middle grade book with mystery and it's share of comedy I highly recommend Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers.
