Meet the Author

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (Sevilla, 1836-Madrid, 1870). España. Nació en Sevilla, hijo del pintor José Domínguez Insausti. Su madre fue Joaquina Bastida de Vargas. Por el lado paterno descendía de una noble familia de origen flamenco, los Becker o Bécquer, establecida en Sevilla en el siglo XVI. En 1846 Bécquer ingresó en el Colegio de Náutica de San Telmo, en Sevilla. Quedó huérfano de madre al año siguiente, el 27 de febrero de 1847, y fue adoptado por su tía María Bastida. Poco después pasó a vivir con su madrina Manuela Monahay, acomodada y de cierta sensibilidad literaria. En su biblioteca empezó su afición por la lectura. Inició entonces estudios de pintura en los talleres de los pintores Antonio Cabral Bejarano y Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer, tío suyo. Tras ciertos escarceos literarios (escribe en El trono y la nobleza y en las revistas sevillanas La Aurora y El Porvenir) marchó a Madrid en 1854. Para ganar algún dinero escribió con sus amigos (Julio Nombela y Luis García Luna) comedias y zarzuelas como La novia y el pantalón (1856), en que satiriza el ambiente burgués y antiartístico que le rodea, o La venta encantada, basada en el Quijote. Hacia 1858 conoció a la que sería su musa, la cantante de ópera Julia Espín. Pero la relación no fructificó porque ella tenía más altas miras y le disgustaba la vida bohemia del escritor, que aún no era famoso. En 1860, en la casa del médico que le trataba de una enfermedad venérea, conoció a Casta Esteban Navarro. Se casaron el 19 de mayo de 1861. En 1860, González Bravo, con el apoyo del financiero Salamanca, fundó El Contemporáneo. Su amigo, Rodríguez Correa, redactor del nuevo diario, consiguió un puesto en él para Bécquer. Más tarde Bécquer dirigió La Ilustración de Madrid hasta poco antes de su muerte el 22 de diciembre de 1870.
