Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rebecca Moore
Katsura has suffered from a crippling anxiety disorder since the age of five, when he accidentally caused his father's injury and hospitalization. His comforter back then was his older brother's best friend, Sou, and still whenever Katsura feels an anxiety attack threatening, only a hug from Sou will calm him. Now that they are both in high school, though, how long will Sou continue to put up with Katsura's neediness? As they practice for an important archery match, Katsura tries to find his own strength, and Sou tries to come to terms with why he has allowed Katsura to become so dependent. Meanwhile Katsura's friend Kouichi wants to take Sou's place, and Katsura's brother-the archery captain-just wishes that the drama would end so that they can shoot straight again. This novel is drawn in typical manga style, although the inevitably beautiful characters are in realistic proportion. Also the mangaka (author) pays particular attention to making the frequent archery scenes true to life (although there is one misplaced bowstring). Katsura looks too young for his age, but as that is typical of the genre, it will not bother fans. Also typical of the genre is the story line's angst, but devotees will appreciate that the characters-particularly the enigmatic and not-quite-trustworthy Sou-are more multilayered and compelling than in the usual fare. Although the story includes little romantic contact, the ending (barely) nudges it into more explicit yaoi (boy love) territory. Try this one with fans of Japanese archery, and boy-love manga.
