Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-- A collection that features 15 action rhymes, 21 nursery rhymes, and 9 lullabies. Most are well known in the U. S., and the few Briticisms are made clear in context. The lullabies include several traditional favorites, such as ``Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,'' as well as less well-known selections. Music is included at the end of the book. The lively illustrations depict several aspects of each inclusion. Pictures for the action rhymes show an adult and child acting out the game as well as an imaginative representation of the activity. The nursery rhymes and lullabies include both realistic and fanciful scenes. A variety of ethnic groups are represented in the characters, all of whom have the cheerful, round, scrubbed quality of Shirley Hughes's and Helen Oxenbury's children. A charming collection, but one that may not be needed in collections that have Anne Rockwell's Gray Goose and Gander (Harper, 1980; o.p.) and others. --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
