School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- Dylan's family has just moved onto the farm they've always dreamed of--50 acres surrounded by old-growth forest in the Pacific Northwest. One day, while exploring, Dylan finds a clearing ringed by towering cedars, a sacred grove where the spirit of an elderly Indian appears and gives him a warning he must transmit to his friends in the local Native American community. With a mixture of rituals and legal tactics, Dylan's family and the local people foil the loggers who would like to clear-cut the forest. Both loggers and environmentalists' viewpoints are presented, although Dowd's sympathies are clearly with the latter. There is no depth of character development, but the story is well told and well paced. The Native Americans are treated both realistically and respectfully. The short length (just over the 100 page minimum set by many teachers) will make it popular with students looking for skinny books for book reports. --Li Stark, North Castle Public Library, Armonk, NY
