Preface

She watched him closely as he slept, aware that Matt couldn't see her or feel her presence. It was hard to see him in so much pain and not be able to simply "fix it" or show him the way. Yet she knew that she had to let him make each step on his own. She could not interfere by helping him until he was ready. She could help him become aware of what he already knew, and that was all. Anything else he was not ready to understand. He would not be able to see or hear her until then anyhow, so all she could do for now was love him and watch. She knew he would come around, and when he did, she would be there.

She watched him sleep alone in the huge bed, in the huge room, in the huge house, reminiscing about all the nights she had watched over him, longing for him to know her.

When Matt was young, his family had continually moved from town to town in the constant search for work, often as laborers in the cotton fields. She remembered the many nights he had cried himself to sleep in the depths of loneliness, not realizing that he wasn't alone. Able to receive his feelings, she recalled the exhaustion and pain his young body had endured from picking cotton for hours on end, with the sun's intensity bleaching his reddish brown hair and burning his face. He and his brother and sisters had helped their mother, endlessly pulling behind them the sacks of cotton that year after year grew bigger as they did, matching them in size. Their father did whatever he could to bring in some meager income, despite a back injury that severely limited his earnings.

Matt's loneliness and hardships were so painful in those years that he had begun to shut out his feelings, which unfortunately excluded her as well. All these years she had waited, knowing him better than he knew himself. She shared each pain and every happy moment, appreciating each fully. She was unknown, unseen. Still, she knew her time was coming as she watched him sleep. Patience was her virtue, which she shared with him whenever she could. In it, she knew his soul's mission and what a timeless thing it was.

Her thoughts turned to the mother and father who had raised him. The life they led was hard and deserving of respect, particularly in light of the compassion they always had for others. His father was stoic, yet kind, a skilled tinkerer who took great pleasure in buying old cars and fixing them up. His mother had always been a hard worker who demonstrated endurance and strength with grace. She had done what she had to do to care for her children, not an easy task in the depths of Oklahoma in the 1940s.

Reviewing Matt's life was like watching a silent movie: The hot dusty fields, the rundown homes with outhouses in back, the bloody fingers from picking cotton, the constant moves from town to town. These all passed by without words; his parents, though kind, had not been much for talking. "Time to get up." "Go wash at the pump." "Please pass the potatoes." "How many bags did you pick today?" "Well, I guess it's time to go to bed. . . ." The art of conversation was a luxury precluded by exhaustion.

Remembering his wedding day, she smiled as she thought about how he had looked as if he were playing "dress up" in his borrowed suit, all six feet four inches of him. In the early sixties in Oklahoma, many people married young, and he was no exception. At seventeen he had believed he was ready for adulthood. In love with Sarah, he couldn't wait to marry her. Sarah was in love with him, too, but was no more prepared for adulthood than he. With a hint of amusement, she remembered their youthful, romantic ideas of marriage.

When his first son, Jerry, was born, Matt was barely more than a babe himself-eighteen and becoming a father. Seven years later, his second son, Tim, was born. The two boys were precious to him, but he was never really sure how to be a dad. He hadn't experienced much of a childhood himself, what with the realities of being poor from birth. Naturally, he had believed that making enough money and being a good provider was equal to good fathering.

Matt's intense desire to break out of pain and poverty had caused him to work hard, first in a gas station, then in a factory and finally in his own businesses. He had sought answers to his questions about life and spent hours on end contemplating and studying ways to find both wealth and happiness. Going from rags to riches, he had eventually begun sharing his discoveries and successes with others.

She was impressed with how far he had come. He had evolved into a powerful seminar facilitator who could move people to action, through teaching them to pull themselves up and make the most of their lives, no matter what their circumstances. Over the past fifteen years, he had transformed from a new, hopeful speaker into a seasoned, dynamic one and had made a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. He had taught them what it takes to be a success, to build a business, to set goals and to reach them, in no small part through the example of his own life. He had given them hope.

Matt was an honest, kind man and a master at the external affairs of life, a motivated soul who was excellent at motivating others. She treasured him for his genuine desire to help people be happy, and she looked forward to the day when he would transcend being simply a motivational speaker into being a truly inspirational one instead. The transformation would occur in the substance of what he taught and the long-term effects of those teachings. She knew the time was nearing for this metamorphosis to begin.

She laughed lightly, causing a ripple of happiness and love to emanate from her presence and reverberate throughout the room. Matt didn't yet know who he was and how he would impact the world, but she did. She blew a gentle kiss to the sleeping man and wove a prayer around him as she watched him wake.
