Children's Literature - Marilyn CourtotMovies often result in spin off books and the film Rio has produced several. This story was based on the motion picture screenplay by Todd R. Jones and Earl Richey Jones. Blu is the narrator and he is a rare Spix Macaw. He began life in the rainforest in Brazil, but was raised in Minnesota. He is back in Rio de Janeiro to save his species. There is a female of his species named Jewel who is destined as a mate for Blu. First readers are introduced to this very large city with its varied terrain and climate and one of the major criminal activitiessmuggling rare animals, especially birds, out of the country. The pictures show that Rio is a huge city and there is a nighttime spread of it as seen from the Visa Chinese. In the meantime Jewel and Blu are trying to make an escape to the rain forest but there are issues, the major one being that Blu doesn't know how to fly. It is quite an adventure as they try to find Luiz who is going to cut through the chain that keeps Blu and Jewel together and evade smugglers all while the Rio Carnival is taking place. For kids who have seen the movie these highlights may be enjoyable. The illustrations are stills from the movie. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
