Overview

From the makers of the hit Ice Age series comes Rio, a comedy adventure about a domesticated blue Spix's Macaw named Blu, who travels to the faraway and exotic land of Rio de Janeiro to find Jewel, the only other bird of his species. Not long after Blu and his owner, Linda, arrive in Rio, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers. With the help of a group of wisecracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu will escape the kidnappers, learn to fly, and return to Linda, the best friend a bird ever had.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Blu is a rare blue Macaw who lives in a bookstore in Minnesota that is owned by his friend Linda. Unlike other birds, Blu cannot fly. Because Blu is one of only two blue macaws left, a scientist named Tulio persuades Linda to bring Blu to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, the other remaining macaw. Wishing to sell the birds on the black market, thieves capture Blu and Jewel, handcuff them together and put them in a cage. Blu calmly opens the cage, but because he cannot fly the two must flee on foot. Tulio and Linda are frantically searching for the missing birds while Blu and Jewel visit a bulldog named Luis to get the handcuffs taken off. Blu argues with Jewel who flies away and is grabbed by a cockatoo named Nigel. He takes off with Jewel to hide her in one of the Carnavale floats until he can return her to the kidnappers. Several more wild adventures ensue before the birds are reunited with Linda and Tulio. Soon new chicks are born and everyone is happy. The illustrations are stills taken from the movie. Unless someone has a child who is really caught up with the original motion picture, there is no need to buy this book, which is just a rehash of the movie. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
