Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
Young readers who delight in strange and unusual trivia will be thrilled with this latest offering from Scholastic Inc. A compilation of material gathered from the "Ripley Believe it or Not!" files, it is a remarkable collection of odd people, places, creatures and fun facts from around the world. Readers will learn about the Sri Lankan man who pulled a 40-ton railway car more than 80 feet using a harness held between his teeth, the four-year old Romanian boy with a tiny bean plant growing in his nose, the waterskiing squirrel, the "feather duster bird," and the Bolivian hotel made entirely of salt. They will read about a man who can bend a steel rod using his neck, a hang gliding Labrador named Buddy, and a tropical island created out of 250,000 plastic water bottles. These and many other curiosities will keep young readers engaged for hours. The text is minimal, and accompanied with full color photographs from the Ripley archives and museums, making this an ideal selection for the reluctant reader. The text begins with a discussion of Robert Ripley, founder of the "Believe it or Not!" empire, including information describing how to submit strange facts for consideration, and ends with a detailed index and photo credit listing. In between are six chapters of facts with such fun titles as Life in the Fast Lane, Totally Obsessed, and Off the Wall. Each chapter has a differently colored band along the top edge of the page to differentiate the chapters allowing readers to quickly and easily find information related to a specific topic. It all adds up to a great package, and a welcome addition to library, school and home bookshelves. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
