Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
From our perch, the seventh installment of the Ripley's Believe It or Not annual is the best yet. This large format hardcover contains 256 pages about superlatively strange people, animals, plants, customs, and places. Previous editions have sold more than four million copies. Judging from the quality of this year's fact-filled, illustrated gathering, there is nothing unbelievable about that.
Children's Literature - David Adams
Tasteless. Tacky. Captivating. Entertaining. Timeless. Robert Ripley's quest for the unbelievable began in 1918 and still goes strong almost a century later. Enter if you dare the world of animal antics, extreme sports, body oddities, bizarre mysteries, fantastic food, amazing science, and artistic license. Older readers enjoying this latest edition will remember the familiar sword swallowers, albino animals, and large cysts, while younger readers might be surprised to find carrier pigeons that delivered faster than the internet. Ripley may have redefined the library subject heading of curiosities and wonders; however this edition has several shortcomings. The gaudiness of color on each page might be expected for such subject matter, but some of the color contrasts make reading difficult. The index is thorough and well done, but the font is somewhat small. Other drawbacks might be confined to the sensibilities of each reader, but there is probably something of interest to everyone. Recommended for reference or circulating collections. Reviewer: David Adams

Gr 3–7—Full of eye-popping, fact-filled oddities, Ripley's encyclopedic compendium is fun for kids of all ages. The various categories include "Extreme Sports," "Bizarre Mysteries," "Body Oddity," "Fantastic Food," and "Amazing Science." Within the pages, readers will discover strange but true stories and facts including a real-life Spiderman, a tree that paints pictures, and a chandelier made entirely out of gummi bears. Full-color spreads provide insight into the strange occurrences and stories found around the world. Miscellaneous lists are scattered throughout, and multiple images hold readers' attention. A dramatic double foldout section of the disreputable world of vampires and two single foldouts that feature a time line of Coney Island's sideshows and a tribute to the world's smallest teenager in an actual-size photograph will spark the interest of those who are skeptics. Other highlights include "Ripley's Research," which provides historical facts, and "Ripley's Revealed," which offers a behind-the-scenes look at bizarre subject content. While secretly learning, readers will continuously browse the fun-filled pages and most definitely share their interesting discoveries with others. An entertaining addition to most collections.—Krista Welz, North Bergen Public Library, NJ
