Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The shiny, glittery cover of this book is certainly eye-catching with its special silvery embossed texture. The central photograph is of a grinning man with sharpened teeth and implants to make himself look more like a reptile. The pictures showing a cat with two faces and a man with a large sword through his tongue are also startling. If these images do not turn the reader's stomach, the pages inside this book hold more photographs of weird, gross, and almost unbelievable images. This edition is loosely divided into sections which include topics like science and biology, body piercing, stretching and mutilation, strange animals, wild near-death accidents, ghosts and bizarre death rituals, and incredible bad luck/good luck stories. The final two chapters are entitled "Just Plain Weird" and "Odds and Ends." These chapters are a collection of various strange events and people. The back matter includes a thorough index. The page design uses day-glow colors in geometric patterns to highlight each entry. Sometimes there are several entries per page, all vying for the reader's attention. 2005, Ripley Entertainment, Ages 8 to 14.
