Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
A vampire bat with paintings of George Washington and Abe Lincoln on the underside of its outspread wings is but one picture on the purple cover of this fascinating book from the "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" series. A plethora of intriguing facts inside the book are accompanied with close-up photos and fact-filled blurbs. The "Deep and Deadly Bite," "Lurking in the Swamps," and "Entombed in Ice" are titles of just three of the topics. Eye-catching pages contain many short paragraphs about various animals. For instance, readers can discover that canisters of worms survived the Columbia space shuttle disaster and that the giant squid grows to sixty-six feet long and has the biggest eyes (larger than soccer balls) in the world. In addition to the paragraphs, fact bars are spread throughout. Some of the bars offer lists of the "Top Five" and "Bottom Five" of featured animals. This book is sure to hold the attention of readers who love trivia. The book could support science lessons as a "jumpstart" to searching for more material about a given animal.
