Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
The front cover of this book contains some interesting photos and the invitation to "Step into the weird world of Ripley's Believe It or Not!" The photos and words are sure to grab the attention of all students whether avid readers or not. The book's format holds a further draw with its many short paragraphs of intriguing tidbits. Facts such as "red herring is the most popular pizza topping in Russia" and that a firefighter from Thailand has eaten a live worm every day for the last thirty years to remain healthy are included. Bright photos, such as the double spread that shows people paddling pumpkin boats, are a fun addition. This book could be read a few pages at a time by students who see something that interests them or all at once. Teachers could use it as a reference to help students consider what seems true and not, how these facts relate to science, and "where in the world" these things take place.
