Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Tane lives, eats and breaths surfing. Every morning before school, and every afternoon after school, he grabs his mother's vintage surfboard and rides the waves with the best. This short, catchy graphic novel tells the story of Tane's run-in with a rival surfer. In keeping with its role as part of the "Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels" series, this volume is packaged like a magazine, with catchy section headings like "Sports Zone Postgame Recap" and "Feature Presentation." The content is designed to attract upper elementary and middle school readers, but the reading level is low, making this an ideal "high-low" title for middle grade reluctant readers. The story is told in first person, with many captions from Tane's point of view. In these captions, Tane discusses his own superstition, using that term, which rings out of character for this young teen. However, this is a minor issue, and although there are other small continuity problems, the bright colors and exciting setting will appeal to many readers. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
