Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Country traditionalist Randy Travis released one of the finest records of 2000 with Inspirational Journey, his first official step into the gospel field. On Rise and Shine, he again uses his wonderfully expressive baritone to weave tales of faith, redemption, and salvation. The characters that populate Rise and Shine are ordinary folks whose stories resonate as powerfully as they do because they're so genuine, like the four passengers in a fatal car wreck on "Three Wooden Crosses." The characters that populate Rise and Shine are ordinary folks whose stories resonate as powerfully as they do because they're so genuine, like the four passengers in a fatal car wreck on "Three Wooden Crosses." Their stories, and the testimony of the lone survivor, are more gut-wrenching than most anything heard in Christian music these days. Surrounding this richly textured landscape of humanity is some fine country twang, from the rollicking title track, "Rise and Shine," to the gently uplifting "That's Jesus" and even the bluesy "Valley of Pain." Travis again works with longtime producer Kyle Lehning, maintaining a stellar partnership that has yielded plenty of winners in the past. Add Rise and Shine to that list.
All Music Guide - Robert L. Doerschuk
On his second gospel album, Rise and Shine, Randy Travis professes his faith within a traditional/contemporary Nashville setting. As steel guitars keen and fiddles whine, he delivers the message clearly, in his familiar unforced, relaxed style. Aside from "Everywhere We Go," a rousing call to resist secular efforts to "take your Commandments off the schoolhouse walls," these songs generally stick to the rusticities long associated with country Christianity, with evocations of Mama and fishin', a whiff or two of brimstone, and unsubtle wordplay "The Son/sun's gonna rise and shine. The music is appropriately sentimental, though the slow-drag, saloon shuffle of "I'm Ready" sounds a lot more like Saturday night than Sunday morning. It adds up to a strong performance, presented with flawless studio clarity and persuasive, understated feeling.

    Tremendous - for everyone!

Randy is back and he is stronger than ever! This CD is tremendous and very inspirational. It is great county/gospel music! I love the songs that are jumpier like Pray for the Fish, my friends can't even complain about that kind of country!

    I love this CD!

I have always loved Randy Travis' country music but was hesitant to get this CD because I'm not much into gospel music. When it came my teenage son and daughter and I listened to every song, we all loved it.

Sounds like traditional Randy with better lyrics

I remember Randy Travis from 1986 with On The Other Hand, and it seems that he still carries a similar style. I have enjoyed both Spiritual Journey and Rise & Shine, they are very good works. Matter of fact, my dad, who is not born again (yet) listened to both of them and he liked them and also liked what the cd's had to say. Now, let me add this, I do not listen to but very little secular country even though I love the music. I long for better lyrics in secular country music. The music is great but the lyrics need to stop trading lust and emotion for true love, remove the lyrics that emply "we can do it, or I can get you over her, you are the best thing that has happened to me", but rather put the focus on Jesus without soundly "churchy". Please understand, I want christian country that sounds similar to secular but without putting secular down or "competeing" with it. I just pray that some christian country artists will be raised up to put out music with the lyrics that we as christians need but with a more up to date, contemporary country style. I am not saying to be "like the world" but to simply have a more modern contemporary sound. All in all I enjoy both of Randy's new cd's. By the way, if by chance an up and coming artist reads this or a well known country artist reads this, please help us a christians to have a more up to date and contemporary country sound. :)

    Classic Randy

If there was ever an ablum that can be addictive, this latest effort "Rise And Shine" by Randy Travis is just that kind of album. Given that it is in the top 10 on Billboards Country Music chart only confrims that belief. This is classic country/gospel and classic Randy Travis. The song selections here are above steller. There is not an emotion that isn't easily felt when listening to these tracks. The amazing talents of this man never ceases to move me. Keep em coming Randy. Your proving once again, your still one of the very best country music has to offer.

    Rise and Shine

Is there no end to this guy's talent? The man that single handedly made traditional country cool again in the mid to late 80's has now released two must have gospel CD's. Randy's smooth baritone voice and obvious faith make this CD a gospel classic, as is Inspirational Journey. While Storms of Life remains his best country work, his two ventures into gospel have been beyond stellar. Put the crown back on this man's unhatted head and give him the credit he deserves!!!

    Rise and Shine

The country crown belongs on this man's unhatted head. Not only did he singlehandledly bring country back to it's roots in the mid/late 80's, he now has two classic inspirational CD's. That booming baritone voice and his obvious convictions make Rise & Shine a must have. But we should not expect less from country's foremost neo-traditionalist, and he has yet to disappoint!!!!

    You'll Be Surprised

When Randy Travis appeared on the Hour of Power with Dr. Robert Schuller, he gave his testimony of where he is in his Christian faith followed by singing two of the gospel songs from the album, Rise and Shine. I sent for the album and when it arrived I immediately played it and loved it. Upon putting the album away in the jewel case, my husband noted a second disc tucked on the other side. WOW! It is a DVD of the making of the album and the story of his life of "bad choices". It is excellent for both the Christian and non-christian persons. I know I will listen and watch this album many times.

Great album from a great guy!!!

This album is one of Randy's greatest. I was much impressed by his first album in 2000. This one is great. I am so glad to see some of the stars coming to gospel and writing about their lives and how Christ has turned their lives around. I don't know which song I liked the best. I recommend you get this album.

    very inspirational

I have listened to many of Mr.Travis songs, but I must say this CD moved me. At first I thought my most favorite song was Three wooden crosses, then I really listened to each song and now I can't say for sure which I like the most. The whole CD was great.

    No Inspirational Journey Here

As a Randy fan, it is regrettable to have to say that this record was dissapointing. Travis's last record, Inspirational Journey, had several quality tunes. This album, on the other hand, has many poor songs. With the exception of Three Wooden Crosses, one of Randy's best efforts in years, this album falls flat. Nearly every other song on the record is poorly written and shabbilly sung by Travis's aging voice. If you're looking for good gospel in the country vein, hold onto Inspirational Journey. This album continues a downward trend for Travis, best characterized by the forgettable albums Wind In The Wire and A Man Ain't Made of Stone.

    Beyond the Journey

In the yearof 2000, I was delighted and impressed with Randy's first gospel CD, "Inspirational Journey" but this CD takes the listener far and beyond "that journey." The musical lyrics vary from strictly religious with such tunes as "Raise Him Up, " "that's Jesus," and "I'm Ready," to the tongue-and-cheek type songs many of his fans have come to know with "Pray for the Fish." Also included are story-type offerings such as "Three Wooden Crosses," and "Mama Prayed" not to mention a song even put to prayer in the "Valley of Pain." Not only lyrically does this CD offer a little something for everyone, musical styles range from country sound, bluesy type sound, bar-room gospel type sounds to the traditional sounding gospel offering heard often on other christian CDs. Not only was I impressed with the lyrics and the music, i was equally impressed with the depth in which the song writers went into real research of scripture to offer such an accurate realization of the times we live in in such songs as "Everywhere We Go"and "Jerusalem's Cry." In summary, i truly believe this is one of Randy's best works ever and if you truly love the gospel sound, you'll love "Rise and shine."

    Exceeds the 5 star rating

When Randy released his first gospel offering "Inspirational Journey" in 2000, I thought there was no way he could top the beautiful offerings found on that album. Here we are 2 yrs later, with another beauty in "Rise And Shine". The variety of material, and musical productions found here are breath taking! Randy's usual expressive barritone puts joy, seriouness, humor and gentility, in each piece as the stories unfold. It is hard to pick one particular track as a favorite. Each one is unique and has a specific message. There is the vigilance of a mother's prayer for her loved ones in "When Mama Prayed". The love of a child that is not your own in " Raise Him Up" The grace of God in " Three Wooden Crosses" The grief but comfort of a loved ones passing in the gentle "If You Only Knew" The promise of eternal life in "The Gift" This entire album is meant to lift you up as it also stirs the conscience. This is another outstanding effort from one of country music's best.
