Overview

An impassioned tale of survival and recovery, this inspirational story recounts the author’s horrific car accident, his subsequent coma, and the more than 15 years of cutting-edge treatments and therapies endured during convalescence. With specific details of the rigorous rehabilitation process that ensued, including numerous breakthrough and experimental surgeries, the book also provides practical insight into navigating the treacherous world of insurance and how to differentiate between the often conflicting medical opinions offered. In addition to describing the numerous procedures undergone, the author tells not only of his pain, frustration, and despair, but also of his childlike wonder at the beauty and miracle of creation. A first-person account of sudden, unexpected tragedy and life-affirming courage, this remarkable tale of regeneration imparts lessons both medical and spiritual.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Simon Lewis was a film producer whose life was turned upside down when his car was broadsided and sent careening into a tree. The accident killed his wife instantly and left him severely injured. He entered a coma he wasn't expected to emerge from, but he did, and over the next dozen years he disproved medical professionals and textbooks with a full recovery while also navigating the labyrinthine insurance industry and managing to find his faith. It's difficult not to be moved by Lewis's story, but the narrative is poorly framed. Much of his tale concerns the multitudinous medical procedures and insurance struggles, neither of which possess, or are given, much drama; Lewis is surprisingly placid for a man relating a series of life-threatening procedures and desperate battles with insurance companies. While readers going through their own medical struggles may find Lewis's experience inspiring and informative, the casual reader will wonder where the story is. (June)

Tikkun olam, How Simon Lewis repaired his world, his life following a life shattering automobile accident.

In Rise and Shine Simon Lewis reveals how life can change forever in an instant. His world, his body, his brain is broken, but not his determination nor his hope. Rather than retreat and remain shattered, he sets out with the help and support of his family, friends, and medical team to repair his world. Honoring the mitzvoth of tikkun olam, Simon shares his intellect, insights, perseverance and process of repair as a testimony and offering of hope to other survivors. The role of advocacy for one's own medical management, the importance of understanding and navigating the medical maze of terms, prognoses, interventions, and the role of technology in rehabilitation are emphasized. But it is the promise of hope and the tenacity of an individual not to be defined by his brokenness that fill Rise and Shine.

Rise And Shine by Simon Lewis

Simon Lewis' account of the tragic auto accident that stole so much from his life and the step by step detail of his recovery was heart-wrenching and compelling. As a veteran in the rehabilitation field, I was drawn into his story and facinated by his eloquent recollection of the earliest days after the accident where he was suspended in a coma, not knowing what had happened, who he was, or if this state of limbo would be his destiny. As Simon's brain and body heals, he takes us through his journey in such painful and moving detail that I can't imagine how this, or any individual, can muster the kind of personal strength and perserverance to want to live on. Simon Lewis is an incredible example of what one can do with their lives if they choose to live after suffering what appears to be insermountable loss. We are left with great hope and assurance through Simon's story that we have the capacity to recover and rediscover life's many gifts.

This is an amazing story which shows how perseverance really pays off and how you need to manage your own medical care. Questioning is a part of the process and pushing for what you need is a must!

I read an earlier version of this book before the final edit. I was a good friend of the wife in the story (I won't give it away). I will say, after reading this journey I am shocked and amazed. Simon takes us through the trenches of what one must go through to fully recover. I have a number of friends who've had minor injuries due to accidents over the years, and each speak of the ridiculous road blocks they hit with insurance companies or drs/therapist telling them they've gone as far as they could come. Simon pushed the envelope and wouldn't take no for an answer. His mother's tenacity is powerful and inspiring.

I am so lucky to have read this journey and to be a part of Simon's experience.

I hope you will all read this book. Recommend it to your friends in the health care or insurance industry, and even to your congressman!

    Enjoy!

This book is a true story that will touch anyone who has ever known someone who has dealt with a traumatic head injury. It is a remarkable story that is at times gut-wrenching, maddening, and unbelievable. Throughout, though, the story is as inspiring as any you will ever come across. It is impossible to not be deeply moved by Simon's will to live, and live fully, despite immense psychological and physical obstacles.

Out of all the books I've read, none has moved me quite the same

Out of all the books I've read, none has moved me quite the same as Mr. Lewis's Rise and Shine. A remarkable autobiographical story of love, tragedy, endurance, human will, family together-ness, not to mention the invaluable lessons learned in dealing with insurance companies. After having read this book, there is so much more about life that I appreciate. Thank you Simon for reminding us all of what life is truly about, and what is important in the end - love, family, health.

    Not the best

This book started well and the story was interesting and motivational. But, about half way through it detiorated into a plethora of medical, surgical and alternative therapies that defy logic and/or medical ethics. Overall, by the last part of the book I lost all compassion for Simon, and saw him as a manipulative attention seeker, brain injury notwithstanding. I couldn't even finish this book as I simply didn't care what doctor, dentist, or other healthcare provider (some of whom sounded like quacks or scam artists) he decided to try next.

    Hi Simon,

I just started reading Rise and Shine a year after first watching your talk on TED. I've rewatched the talk at least a half dozen times. Such an amazing message on countless levels. Nobody could wish such a tragedy on anyone but the fact that you've been able to experience such a journey and then communicate the spiritual, social, physical, psychological, economic, medical, scientific, and technological lessons/observations almost seems as though humanity needed you and your family to go through this so that it could be recorded and shared. I want to think of the great researchers that performed experiments on themselves and then think this is the experiment that no human could ever volunteer for. So few would have had the ability to put this out there for the rest of the world to benefit from. Truely amazing!

    Best wishes
    Gabe

From the superficial wounds in his skin to the deep, deep wounds

From the superficial wounds in his skin to the deep, deep wounds in his soul, Simon Lewis recovers miraculously from a car hit-and-run that leaves his young wife dead and himself almost dead. For fifteen years moving on 'a long and winding road', he himself calls his 'hidden path', he restlessly seeks full recovery. He gets into a seemingly never ending struggle with doctors who seldom tell him what he should know, insurance companies who constantly try to get rid of him and his own fear and doubt, but in the end at last ‘finds’... full recovery.
Simon Lewis does not see himself as a courageous man. Suppose he is right about this, I guess we urgently need to find another word for someone who lives through the kind of cascade of nightmares he has gone through for years and years, finally finding himself mentally and spiritually still in one piece. That is to say, actually, in more than one piece...

    Never give up...

Rise and Shine tells Simon Lewis' heart-wrenching odyssey through the health-care system as he rebuilds his life following a devastating car accident. It's a fascinating read and everybody will take something else away from the book, but for me the gist of the book was that you should never give up, never rely on only one doctor (always get a second/third opinion), and above all, investigate for yourself the path that could lead to healing. Chapeau!

    An Inspiration for All

An extraordinary, eye-opening account of Simon Lewis' journey through modern medicine and a man's will to full recovery which gives us hope, lifts our spirits and inspires/encourages us to never give up. From a hit and run car accident 15 years ago that took the life of his wife and left him for dead, Simon chronicles his recovery from his first days in the hospital until his independence is complete.

As the pieces of his life slowly get put back together and become clearer, a man is faced with brain damage from a massive stroke that left him in a coma, the loss of his wife and the inability to accomplish basic tasks that we all take for granted every day. Through it all, Simon found the strength to not only write this book, but to teach his readers the importance of celebrating each day life has to offer.

The book is a riveting page-turner

"Rise and Shine" by Simon Lewis is a true story of a sixteen year journey from life, to near death and back to life again. Lewis is a skilled writer who takes you on his heroic journey through a course of treatments involving complex medical procedures and surgeries, which was expressed clearly and succinctly so that anyone can read it without being caught in the mumbo-jumbo of scientific terms.
The book is a riveting page-turner that one cannot put down. It also provides hope, courage and resources for anyone seeking to be well.

    I Also Recommend:

Rise and Shine Tells It Like It Is

So many times, when we are sick or injured, we have only our healthcare professional(s) to trust. This book not only tells an amazing story of Simon's journey to wellness, but it also points out the shortcomings of our medical care system. Not everyone knows everything you might expect them to. You have to look farther to find your answers--and never give up. This book was a real eyeopener for me. I don't think I will every look at medicine the same way again.

Simon shares the trauma of his life with hope and care. He's written a book that will educate the uninformed and help those living it.

A tribute to Rise and Shine

Simon's remarkable journey from tragedy to triumph following a horrific accident is testimony to the power of love, hope against all odds, and resiliency. As a fellow survivor of multiple serious injuries and an extended recovery, I cried, winced, shook my head and laughed through each loving page of this book. It is an important account of the many issues and challenges injured individuals and their families must endure in addition to, and at the same time they are striving to recover (a modern crime against humanity in some respects). This coupled with the complexities of brain injury and how it affects our physical ability to heal, demonstrates the importance of self advocacy and continuous, caring support to help survivors succeed in their quest to become whole again. I agree with Simon's dear friend; this is an important book - it should be read by survivors of trauma and their families, the medical community and care givers alike, our leaders and legislators, plaintiffs Attorneys and members of the insurance industry. Additionally, this is also a book about spiritual enlightenment, mystery and the beauty that is life. I'd recommend Simon's book to those seeking answers to our existence as well. Thank you Simon for sharing your story :~)

Tools to help achieve anything in life.

"Rise and Shine" is more than just a riveting and inspirational story of one man's path to a remarkable recovery. This book is an example and guide about how to achieve anything remarkable in life, and it demonstrates that the path to recovery, or success, satisfaction...whatever - is unique for each individual. The path forged in this factual drama is through the American medical system -- a system that severely hinders the efforts of those such as Simon Lewis who would face a path to recovery that happens to lie outside of the self-serving parameters of our medical system's business model and risk management practices.

This book is a personal story that offers great insights into how to manage major medical care. But much more, it is a guide to life -- written with wit, pace and the unique ability of Simon Lewis to observe and narrate his deeply personal experiences, without becoming self-absorbed in the process. We can all gain from taking his journey.
