A band that I have loved for years makes a pretty radical change in their sound by moving from being 100% old school traditional to more of a commercially accessible version of that school. Without totally selling out as a radio friendly band, I can hear a lot of classic little Icarus touches in the songs though the overall feel is different. The chorus’s are very memorable, something really quite new from the band as they never really did chorus’s like this before and it works, because after only one listen, I had riffs & certain chorus‘s rattling around in my memory days later. The biggest change is in the song structuring during the lyrical content, where most of the bombastic riffs of old are replaced with more of a “pop” chords feel to it without the songs sounding poppy. I will get this out of the way now… if they move further in that direction they’ll lose me as a fan because the "metalness factor" will be gone. With that said, Icarus Witch have written a GREAT batch of tunes here & Christopher Shaner is an awesome vocalist (seen him live, excellent stage presence). The great classic Icarus musicianship is there if you really know what to listen for, it’s just in a different wrapper, this being more in the melodic hard rock vein with the more metallic side scattered around. The typically excellent guitar work still is superb, just not quite as in your face as in the past, but still tastefully done and there‘s plenty of fretwork fireworks on this platter…the leads are still smoking hot. You could fool a lot of people if they didn’t know upfront what they are listening to. So despite all these changes, the boys still have released an awesome arena rock friendly album that will have you drinking beers to all summer long. Long live the Witch !!
