Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
Briggs begins his "anti-series" with tween boys Toby and Pete jumping out of a crashing plane. If that is not a hook, what is? Flash back seven days and the boys, along with Toby's sister, Lorna, and her friend, Emily, were just regular kids doing regular kid stuff. When the crew stumbled upon a website—hero.com—which allows them to download super powers, they will finally have the opportunity to make their mark. Together they successfully stop a menace named Doc Tempest from pulling off a bank heist. Tempest is not just in it for petty crimes, though. He is looking to use weather systems to take over the world. In retaliation for the way they have interfered with his plans, Doc Tempest kidnaps Toby and Lorna's mother and destroys their home with a tornado. The group is pushed to their limits physically, mentally, and emotionally as they manage the sometimes odd super skills they have downloaded. Sibling conflict takes over at times and the reader will want to close the book until they get over it, but Briggs' premise is intriguing enough to reel them back in. Recommended for fans of Alex Rider, Jimmy Coates and Ordinary Boy. Reviewer: Kristy Lyn Sutorius
School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—Siblings Toby and Lorna and their friends Peter and Emily come across a mysterious Web site called Hero.com that beckons them to download superpowers. Intrigued by the idea, they pick powers from vague icons and then check a "job board" from which they can choose crime-fighting missions. A bank robbery piques their interest and they fly off, unsteadily, to their first adventure. Here they meet Doc Tempest, a criminal mastermind, who is intent on taking over the world under the cover of bad weather—he uses hurricanes and such to hide his exploits. They stop the robbery but they anger Doc Tempest, who then kidnaps Toby and Lorna's mother. The budding superheroes must now rescue her and the adventures continue. The concept of downloading superpowers is interesting, but given that the four youngsters don't know what powers they have and how to control them, the fact that they still manage to fight off an invincible outlaw seems implausible. Add to that clichéd language, flat characterizations, and obvious plot turns, and the book doesn't get high literary marks. But with its nonstop adventures and of-the-moment techy concept, it will appeal to science-fiction fans.—Shawna Sherman, Hayward Public Library, CA

Bored in the house one afternoon, Toby and Lorna and their friends stumble upon an interesting website that grants them superpowers for an hour. They try out the powers, not believing their eyes.

After a parent interrupts them, they're desperate to try again. They reconvene at the next possible opportunity to each sign up for powers and test them out. With their new powers comes responsibility - they now must stop a robbery in progress.

However, the foursome hasn't thought this plan all the way through. Weapons may trump superpowers. Luckily, with their new powers, they come out on top this time, but they make a new enemy: Doc Tempest.

He's got major supervillain powers and he's targeting Toby and Lorna's mother. He kidnaps her and holds her as a hostage. Can the group use their superpowers to locate his hideout and rescue her before things get much worse?

RISE OF THE HEROES has a companion book, COUNCIL OF EVIL, plus an interactive website where readers can take a test to see what side they would play for, create their own characters, and battle their friends.

It's a good read for middle school students who like comic book superheroes or for someone looking for a fast-paced adventure.
