All Music Guide - Erik Crawford
O.A.R. is coming into its own, progressing from a college band to a viable national act. Their third release combines tracks from their previous two albums with new songs, to create a strong representation of the band's past and present musical styles. Produced by John Alagia Ben Folds Five, Vertical Horizon, Dave Matthews Band, Risen is more polished and professional than its predecessors. Some of O.A.R.'s faithful may find themselves yearning for the more upbeat, rawer versions of the older songs, but the first-time listener will discover the new versions to be more homogenous with the rest of the album. Marc Roberge's infectious vocals play naturally against his acoustic guitar, while Jerry DePizzo's sax brings texture to a tight rhythm section. The reggae riffs and catchy hooks are in abundance on Risen, making it easily accessible. The band's sound is maturing, while keeping the edge that is the pulse of its live performances.

    Great band, terrible CD.

I like this band, but sadly, this disk is not up to par. Whatever soul the band may possess, they evidently forgot to bring it with them when this cd was recorded. Some of the titles appear on other disks in their collection, and frankly, sound better. The all music reviewer used the term homogenous, that must be a polite way of saying "bland". After listening to their previous effort "The Wanderer" and the live cd "Anytime Now", one can't help but to wonder: "what went wrong here?". It's hard to imagine the same band recorded this cd. Still the disk has a few tunes worth having in your collection, noteably "King of the thing" and "Hey Girl".

    Dave Matthews hits Bob Marley

While at The Ohio State University I saw O.A.R. at six sold out shows. They put on an amazing show, but their music translates equally as well through their CD's. The band plays for their fans and the love of music, and it shows. The lyrics carry meaning while the beats make you want to sing along with your friends. Everyone I know in Columbus, Ohio knows who they are, and most of them have all three of their CD's. Get on their bandwagon now, because the sky is the limit for these guys.
