Overview

In a war between the humans and the inhabitants of the sea-humans will lose. Xanthus Dimitriou-the most lethal Dagonian to rise from the ocean-is on a mission to save mankind from annihilation. But first there's one small thing he needs to do... kill a beautiful young woman in a wheelchair.

Killing her doesn't start out as part of his plan. He entrenches himself deep in the human world. Aligning with his enemies, he prepares to send them to Triton to face their punishment. Then Sara Taylor rolls onto the scene. Xanthus knows at once she's a criminal. And her crime? Being born. She's a human/Dagonian half-breed, an abomination. Killing her should be an easy job. All he has to do is break into her apartment, slit her throat, and feed her body to the sharks. Simple, right? Wrong. If only she weren't so beautiful, so innocent, so sweet... Saving the world may have to wait. It appears Xanthus has a woman to save. But protecting her may cost him his own life.

OMG the prologue! I think it was awesome, and just wow. Can you imagine that happening to you, that’d be a story to tell people wouldn’t it haha! You seriously need to read it if you haven’t already!!!! Fangirling right now ;)

I absolutely loved this book right the way through to the epilogue which was also amazing! The writing was magical, seriously, I felt like I was under a spell. All day I was like “hmmm… I’ll just finish this chapter then I better do the cleaning before my man gets home” but nope no cleaning has been done today, bad I know but I just couldn’t help it ;)

Mermaids are one of my favorite fantasy/mythical creatures. The only way they can get better in my eyes is if they could fly. And they sort of can in Rising as they hover so I was well pleased. I also liked how it wasn’t just mermaids but Dagonians too who are sort of like Mers but not and yeah they totally hate each other which just a whole lot of fun to the tale.

Sara is a character you just can’t help but love. Even though she has had a rubbish life she still makes the most of it and powers through. Yeah so she hides her body as she’s self-conscious but she doesn’t let it stop her from going out (much), she’s still determined to do everything herself. I admired her a lot and was made up with how things turned out! You go girl :P

Xanthus *wipes drool from chin* is a sexy beast, well dagonian but still. He’s just full of yumminess. He’s 7foot tall, muscular, crazy-good looking and goes out of his way to help Sara and make sure she’s safe *swoon* arrgghhhh I think I’m in love. I can’t say much more about him I’m afraid or I wont be able to stop and I’ll ruin it for everyone who has yet to read it.

Just wow, everything about Rising is incredible. The plot, the writing, the romance, the fighting. It had the right amount of everything and I LOVED it. You guys get the point yet? Haha

And now I’m desperate to find out what happens next. But I have Descending (book 2) so I’ll be starting that as soon as I finish writing this review YAY. If you love fantasy books, and/or mermaids then I highly recommend reading the Rising series. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, I sure wasn’t!

Seeing Double in Neverland Blog

This book was amazing!!! It was one of my favorite Mermaid books, it was more mature then most I have read and that I could relate based on where I am in my life. It was not mature in that it had sexual content, or profanity, it was very clean. It was just that the characters were a little bit older and that there were more struggles in their lives and more violent situations (that people living in poor neighborhoods or someone out at night alone might deal with).

I loved the complexity of the characters in that they were multifaceted. Some of the characters struggle with themselves and are neither good nor bad. I love the romance and mythology that Holly Kelly has created in her story. The different races of underwater life was a great twist and it not just being Mermaids, was a wonderful addition to the book.

The book starts with a woman giving birth to a baby that has deformation with her legs and they are fused together. There is also a war under water brewing as the waters have been polluted by the humans and the race called Dagonian's want to make them pay for killing some of them and ruining their homes. But Xanthus believes that these humans can be reasoned with and goes to the god of the under water and the last of the Mer people and asks him if he can live among the humans. He promises to make those who have caused the pollution pay to Triton and to see if he can then seek peace, but Triton only gives him a year to do this.

When Xanthus is in Hawaii he notices a young women and he senses that something is different about her and immediately he knows that he shouldn't be drawn to her but he is. He knows that she should be killed for if she is discovered it could mean bad things for their kind and her living here is against the law.

Xanthus decides to get close to her to try to find out her story, who is she, why is she here? He soon starts to question everything he has been trained to believe and questions his mission. He soon realizes that he would risk everything to be with her.

I love this book, it is one of the best books I have read! It was well written, imaginative, not vulgar or to sexual, it was romantic and so full of fantasy and action. This was a great book for a man or a woman! Definitely a 5 out of 5 stars!!!

I requested a review copy of this (okay, I begged) and was granted it and then I read it all in one sitting and am waiting until I can re-read it again. This book releases in 2 days and you, too, will be able to enjoy Xanthus & Sara.  The prologue opens with a woman giving birth and not one, but two nurses fainting dead away when they see the baby. And then chapter one opens twenty years later... Sara is in a wheelchair thanks to her disfigurement (her legs...which, of course, are not legs but a tail!) Xanthus is on a mission from King Triton to find and punish those polluting the oceans and killing off sea creatures and Dagonians alike. Imagine Xanthus's surprise to find one of his own on land... The chemistry between Xanthus and Sara is immediate. He is an overwhelming presence and Sara knows not what to make of him. I loved how Xanthus has this protective attitude that he just can't seem to help and sets about making sure Sara is safe. Sara's BFF is so happy for her; it was so sweet to see a friendship between women that wasn't catty.  I was livid at Xanthus's mother, enamored of his sister, ecstatic of Sara's parentage, and disgusted by the evilness that is Xanthus's brother, Gael, and his father. Just pure maliciousness poisoning the waters there!  The ending is incredibly satisfying and, after much turmoil, a HEA. I love mermaid tales, paranormal fantasies, romances, and books with action, a woman who doesn't melt into her lover's demands/opinions, and a man who adores and takes care of his woman. This has it all. By far the best mermaid tale I've read yet, I want this to be a series. A long series, exploring different characters with Xanthus & Sara popping in and out.  This is from Clean Teen Publishing and the romance is just that, clean. But you know...I was not expecting it to steamy! The sexual chemistry and tension was nearly palpable! Oh, and the epilogue. OMG MS KELLY! I know this is releasing in 2 days, but PLEASE tell me you have more written in this world?! Pretty please?

A fun take on mermaids, not appropriate for young readers. Despite the terrible editing, sometimes flat characters, and mystifyingly inappropriate content in an overall clean book, this was a really fun read! I loved Holly Kelly's take on mermaids and the story had a twist I didn't see coming! Parental advisory: This book has sexual content (attempted rape scene and propositioning) and language not appropriate for young readers

I really enjoyed this book and found myself neglecting life so I could squeeze in another chapter. :) There were some really unique and interesting details in this novel that really helped the world building. I was fascinated by the social structure of the Dagonian society (I agree with Sara, they need a women's rights movement!). The whole men-can-smell-fertile-women thing was interesting, and reminded me a little bit of Twilight (in a good way). I loved Xanthus as a character. He was the perfect hero--strong, handsome, and protective. I loved watching Sara come out of her shell with Xanthus's influence in her life. I appreciated the challenges Sara encountered as a wheelchair-bound individual, and I enjoyed seeing her struggles in the human world. But I really liked the Dagonian world! The author gave enough of a description that I had a very vivid picture in my head, but not so much description that I grew bored. Towards the end of the novel, the dialogue grew oddly stilted at times, and I felt like Sara broke character a bit too much. It may have been intended as a character arc, but it was too abrupt and swift for me. There were a few grammatical issues as well. Overall, however, this book was a story that kept me up late at night reading and had me hiding away in my bedroom to finish while my husband took care of the kids. A fantastic debut novel! I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next. I really hope there will be more stories set in the Dagonian world. Rising is set to release on September 6, this Friday! Start saving your pennies, because this one is worth buying. 4.5 stars raised to 5. I received a free ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

This was a gripping book. Sara has a deformity of the legs since birth. She's part human, part not. And Xanthus is a Dagonian (picture huge merman) who is supposed to clean up messes like her to keep their existence a secret. But then he ends up falling in love with her. He comes to the surface with an assignment to bring some humans polluting the water to justice and ends up finding Sara instead. It was great to see the torture Xanthus experienced as he tried to fight his attraction to her and to also do what he'd been assigned to do. It isn't for young readers. It's clean yet romantic. Violent and gripping, yet not to the extreme. I'd recommend it to adults and older teens since there is some content that's pretty mature.

This was my first book of Holly Kelly's and I enjoyed every moment of it.   I love paranormal and mythology, so this book was right ups my alley.  Ms. Kelly took you to the depths of the sea and on land.  She created such wonderful characters, Sara, who thought she was crippled to Xanthus the warrior.  They both were on they own adventures, Sara to find independent and Xanthus to stop a war from occurring between mankind and the sea or Dagonians (similar to mermaids, but not the same).     The characters are well written and paired and you read how they become attached to each other and fall in love.  But, danger is always around and the twist and turns of this story keeps you involved.  Ms. Kelly did a wonderful job in writing this book and I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal/mythology romance.

Let me start by saying that I've been burned by several books in the paranormal romance category lately. One book I couldn't even finish because it became too graphic. RISING was like a breath of fresh air. It stayed clean, yet the romance was still enjoyable. This was a new twist on the mermaid tale. I didn't feel like I was being retold Ariel's story. I enjoyed the history of the Dagonians and the mermaids. It kept my interest throughout. I never felt like it dragged. In fact, I finished it in two days, while being sick and having all four kids at home. I'm also very impressed with Clean Teen Publishing. I feel like Alice waking up in Wonderland. You mean I can read the books I love without wading through all the garbage? Yes, please!

Unique, fun, full of action, and just the right amount of romance!!   This is not your typical mermaid book!  I was drawn in by the cover, held by the promise of a good read, and captivated by the creativity and execution!  Dagonians rule the sea and are torn between their feelings of humans.  Some want to destroy all human kind while others feel not all humans are bad.  Meet Sara, a half human and Dagonian who has no idea what she is.  To the world, she is a beautiful woman in a wheelchair.  But to the Dagonian's, she is marked for death.   Enter Xanthus, super hot Dagonian fish guy who has a mission to destroy Sara and keep their secret safe, until he discovers that saving Sara is worth more to him, even if it means his life.     I was pulled in from the first word and loved to see how the characters developed.  The story line kept my attention and I found myself stealing moments away from the day to finish the next sentence, paragraph, chapter.  :)  I am looking forward to reading more from this author!

I have always been fascinated by Greek Mythology, so it is no surprise that I loved how the author weaved this tale, adding her own personal touch to the mythological details. Holly Kelly maintains a unique and interesting setting by pulling the storyline underwater with a mermaid-like Dagonian species as well as humans and half-humans on the surface. I especially enjoyed the latter-end of the book where the reader gets to dive into the Dagonian world. The author has a descriptive talent for helping the reader see through her creative eyes! The love-story is sweet and innocent (it was so refreshing not to have to worry about unneccessary sexual details) and definitely peeked my interest for book 2!

Holly Kelly Rising I’ll admit I got a little confused in the beginning, but that may have something to do with the fact that I was ill and my brain really wasn’t focusing on anything. Once I got passed that, and the answers fitted into place, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I loved that it was told from the 2 main characters POV, giving the full picture and letting the reader feel how each was affecting the other. Both Xanthus and Sara are strong characters, and with the descriptive nature I was completely drawn in to their developing relationship. A sweet and intriguing read. I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!! **Received an ebook copy from Clean Teen Publishing for an honest review   The cover is absolutely beautiful!!  I was intrigued from the first moment I saw it!  Marya did a fantastic job!   The story was phenomenal and I loved every moment of reading it!  I couldn’t put it down in fact I read it straight through much to my son’s chagrin.    I totally fell in love with Xanthus and Sara.  Sara is strong, independent, and doesn’t just cower and hide when something bad happens.  I couldn’t imagine being confined to a wheel chair or people thinking you were an abomination.  She is very strong and a great role model for not giving up.  Xanthus is a fierce and protective warrior with a soft spot for Sara.  He also sounds very dreamy :)   This is a awesome combination of mythology, sea creatures, and the real world.  Can you imagine if Dagonians or mermaids were real?  What if they lived among us?  Do you think they would appreciate what we do to the world?  I think it would be cool to swim the oceans and not fear for your life from sharks and everything else that lives in the ocean especially if Xanthus was by your side.   Okay the ending frustrated me, but you have to read it to see what I mean!!  I can't wait to read more about this awesome world!!  Holly totally rocks!!  :)   I will definitely be adding this book to my library in paperback.  If you like mermaid adventures, you will love this one!!

I am an avid fan of mermaids. I feel like I should always start out my review of mermaid type books in this manner. It's going to be very hard to make me dislike a book about mermaids and/or sea creatures. This book was no different. I enjoyed the mythology involved in telling the story and I loved that there were two different types of mermaid type creatures involved. The main character was very strong willed and knew what he wanted to accomplish in his life. I liked that he didn't just follow the opinions of the others of his kind and had his own mind. The lead female character was strong in her own way too, though perhaps too set in how her life would be rather than dreaming of more. I see the potential already for a series, and would have even if I didn't know that there would be more books. This series, with this start, has the potential to even be a long lasting series, there are just so many different ways you could go with it. The author has written characters that you could grow with and that you'd keep coming back to see how their lives were going. There is also a population of other characters that you could branch off with. If you like mermaid lore and mythology, you will really love this book. I'm already working on book 2!

I have had this freebie on myblist to read for a while, but just never felt pulled to read it. I have no idea what finally had me read this but I enjoyed everything about this book once I got into it. The start was a little slow for me, but it did not take long for me to be engrossed in the story. I felt that Sara and Xanthus worked well together. The other characters were okay. Gretchen was protective and well meaning. The bad guys were truly unlikeable. I really liked Xanthus by the end of this book and I want things to work out for them. This is a very appropriate book for YA. No sex or foul language that any human could interpret. Easy read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Rising by Holly Kelly is the first book in the Rising series. This was an intriguing little book. It took some of the myths we already new about mermaids and added some new things to them by creating a similar yet new creature, the Dagonians. The attraction between Xanthus and Sara was pretty quick, but they were cute. The characters and the plot grabbed me in the beginning, then things seemed to fall flat as the story progressed, and then towards the end it started grabbing me again. There was a twist, but you could see it coming pretty easily. I still enjoyed the book though, and I'm curious as to what's to come next. Love, love, love the cover!
