"Mr. Taylor, do you want to make a statement?"

Michael remained still, his hands resting on his thighs, his shoulders back. He'd been in this Chicago P.D. interrogation room for the better part of an hour and hadn't said a word.

"Mr. Taylor," Detective Hollandsworth repeated, "your wife was murdered last night and you have nothing to say?"

Oh, he had a lot to say, the first being he didn't kill his wife, but if he'd learned anything running one of the nation's most elite private security companies, it was to keep his trap shut. "Not until my lawyer gets here."

An alien sensation settled on him. Shock? Disbelief? Maybe even sadness because a woman he had loved, a woman who had once been vibrant and fun and sexy, a woman who had grown into a greedy, unhappy wife was dead. Jesus. He may have wanted to end the nightmare of a marriage, but murder? No way.

In his worst bout of rage he wouldn't have done that to her. Sure they were finalizing a brutal—and costly—divorce, but money he had and if giving up some of it meant getting her out of his life, he'd do it. Simple arithmetic.

Right now, the only thing Michael knew was that these two detectives banged on his door at 8:00 a.m. to haul his ass in for questioning.

He flicked a glance to the two-way mirror behind Hollandsworth's head. The room's barren white walls and faded, sickening stench of fear-laced sweat made Michael's fingers twitch. He'd keep his hands hidden from view. No sense letting his nerves show.

The side door flew open and smacked against the wall with a thwap. Hollandsworth and his younger partner, Dowds, shifted to see Michael's lawyer storm in wearing a slick gray suit complete with pocket hanky.

Arnie Stark set his briefcase on the metal table. "Is he under arrest?"

"Not yet," Hollandsworth said.

"Do you have anything to hold him?" Arnie held up a hand and his diamond pinky ring flashed against the overhead light. "Wait. Let me rephrase. Do you have anything to hold him on that I won't shred in the next two hours?"

The room stayed quiet.

Arnie turned to Michael. "Have you said anything?"

"No."

The lawyer jerked his head without dislodging even one strand of his gelled gray hair. "Good. Let's go."

Thank you. Before Michael could move from his chair, Hollandsworth stood. "We're not done."

Arnie stopped in the doorway, spun around and said, "Charge him then."

Again the room went silent and Michael broke a sweat. The idea of being locked up scared the hell out of him. Hollandsworth's face took on the tight look of a balloon about to burst and Michael let out a breath.

Arnie pointed to the door. "We're leaving."

Once outside the police station, the late March wind coming off Lake Michigan slammed into Michael and he sucked in air as if he'd been without it for months. "I didn't do it."

"I don't care,"Arnie said. "I'm your lawyer, not your priest. You want someone to hold your hand, I'm not your guy. You want someone to keep you out of prison, that's me."

Not that Michael needed a babysitter, but hell, he'd appreciate his lawyer believing in his innocence. Then again, this particular lawyer was the best in the city. Anyone living in Chicago knew that because he seemed to be on the news every other week touting another win.

"Keep me out of prison. What now?"

"We go back to my office and you tell me every disgusting detail of your relationship with your wife."

"Ex-wife,"Michael corrected.

"Not yet she wasn't."

    My favorite of the series!

This was my favorite book of the series so far. I really enjoyed the dynamics between Roxann and Michael. I usually base my opinion on a book on whether or not I want to purchase it (rather than go through the library) and this was one that I bought so I could read it multiple times and have read it twice in 2011. I liked how strong of a person Roxann was and she did not just fall back into Michael's arms and pick up where they left off. She made him work for her trust again and really wanted him to explain what happened to them so long ago. I enjoyed the suspense aspect of this book as well. I really had no idea who "did it" until the end and was shocked to find out! Roxann also learned a lot regarding things that happened in the past and about her mom, dad, and uncle. I felt so sad for her during these times but was glad Michael was with her to help her through. Vic was a great addition to the story (as he is in any story). You could tell that he cared a great deal for both Michael and Roxann. I enjoyed many of the scenes including Michael & Vic tag-teaming Roxann before a run as well as the "clean sheets" scenes! I like that Vic makes an appearance in all of her books so far, too. This book included great relationship dynamics, suspense, and just the right amount of steamy passion! Another great book by Adrienne Giordano!

    READ THIS ONE FIRST!!!

Risking Trust (Private Protectors, #3) READ THIS ONE FIRST!!! For some reason this book is number three but the events in it take place before the other two books. This is Michael & Roxann’s story. Twelve years ago, Michael walked out on Roxann without explanation. Now he needs her help. Michael's estranged wife has been murdered and he is the prime suspect. This is a well told story and a good mystery.

strong heroine, sexy hero, decent mystery, great romance

I must admit I haven't read the two books before this one, but that's not really a problem since these books seem to be stand-alones. I really liked Roxann. I thought she was strong, smart, capable and honest. The perfect heroine in a romance where lost love was regained and misunderstandings finally laid to rest. I liked how real she was and how well suited Michael was to challenge the certainty in her character. The mystery is not overly complex. It did take me two thirds of the book to become relatively certain I knew who the real killer was (obviously not Michael, since this book's categorized as a romance-mystery), but once I did it seemed almost obvious. Anyway, the pacing was great. Not too rushed, and Michael's troubles with his wife's murders ran parallel with Roxann's troubles at her Newspaper Press. In the end their misunderstandings from so long ago also made perfect sense. It was the kind of problem real people - with pride that can be hurt, with feeling which can be manipulated, with a sense of hopelessness as too much time passes without explanations - face in their relationships. Some can get over it, and some like Michael and Roxann are forced to part ways. In their case, I'm glad they found their way back again. DICLOSURE: I received an ARC from netgalley and have tried to write as unbiased a review as I can.

    Great start to the series

This is the first book in the Private Protectors series. And before I begin with my thoughts on the book, this book was released 3rd in the series, but is the actual start. If I would have read the other two first, I can't say my thoughts on the book would be all that good. Key players were introduced in this book, and it would be weird to read out of order and not know the story of the leader of the private protection agency.

That being said...I really liked this book. The banter between Roxann and Michael was refreshing. The hurt seemed very real and the pain Roxann was going through about losing her father was heartbreaking. You could tell the author had her own personal experience to lean on and it showed in the writing. I really enjoyed meeting some of the secondary characters such as Vic and Gina and the kids. I was a little upset there wasn't more with Gina's oldest son, it seemed that Michael was a mentor of sorts for him, but after one run away, there wasn't much more said. I felt if the kid was dealing with the loss of his father, Michael would have been more front and center for him. I found this book to be very fast to read, probably because I couldn't put it down. I thought I knew who-done-it early on, but I was very surprised with the ending, which was a bonus for me. Finding out the villain early on in a book is a real turn off for me. Adrienne is a new author to me, but I can honestly say, I can't wait for Vic's book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

    I ADORED this book!

    My Review:
Wow! So many twists and turns that I did NOT see coming. This was simply a fantastic novel. Great romance! Great suspense! A mystery that I could NOT figure out! Wow!

The history between Michael and Roxann was so heart-breaking, but it just added to the suspense because it wasn't until almost the very end before you find out why their relationship fell apart 12 years ago and they both ended up in this awful place.

And this awful place is really, truly horrible. Michael is being accused of murdering his ex-wife...the girl he married instead of Roxann. Quickly after getting married, he realized that he had made a mistake, but then there was no going back. He has spent the last two years going through a horribly vicious divorce from this woman who tromped on his heart and their vows over and over again. Roxann has never recovered from the heartbreak of Michael leaving her. She now tries to control every aspect of her life so she is never blindsided like that again. But life has been throwing her too many loops lately for that to be the case.... starting with watching her father suddenly die of a heart attack just a few weeks ago.

The build-up between these two is sizzling. There is no debating that the chemistry from 12 years ago is still there for both of them, but Roxann refuses to trust Michael with her heart again, but as they get to know each other again, the lure is definitely there and so hard to resist.

This was a book that definitely touched me emotionally. There is so much angst with the history between these two, but there is also the fact that Roxann is dealing with the debilitating grief of losing her father and having to suddenly take over the second largest newspaper in Chicago... and all the stress involved with that. Then there is Michael who is obviously getting railroaded by the police department and the very real terrifying fear that he may be sent off to jail for a VERY LONG time. Adrienne handled these very real, heart-wrenching emotions so expertly. Your heart truly goes out to both of these characters. Love can be hard enough and their 12 year separation was a tough one. It was a really moving book!

This is book #3 in the series, but it actually falls as #1 in the timeline of the series. It was interesting to see glimpses of Vic & Gina (the actual book #1) in reverse...before they became involved. I wasn't sure how it was going to feel to go backwards in the timeline, but it worked. It was nice to get a bit more insight into the other characters and how they were dealing before they discovered each other.

I have loved this series, but I honestly think that this has been the best book so far! Really just an excellent read!
