Editorial Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle
Lonely Planet brings its customary panache to this collection of true tales.
— San Francisco Chronicle
Library Journal
Meant to serve as a companion to the publisher's Europe on a Shoestring, this collection of writings by young first-timers to Europe describes their experiences backpacking across the continent. Each chapter begins with a few pages of e-mail excerpts about traveling experiences. A variety of experiences is described, some pleasant and some downright awful: the first chapter ("Getting the Hang of It") includes 11 stories about first encounters with Europe, from buying drugs in Amsterdam to using a bathroom in Germany; the second chapter ("You Get What You Pay For") includes experiences about being cheated or ripped off; the third chapter ("Getting It On") describes romantic and sexual encounters; and the final chapter ("Being There") includes stories about friendships made and the way travel affects one's perception of self as well as those around us. Writing styles differ considerably, as does the quality of the writing. For the most part, the stories contain little depth and are meant to serve as quick sketches of events, places, and experiences. And since they were written by youngsters, rather than expert travel writers, they will mostly appeal to high school and college students. For larger public libraries.-Alison Hopkins, Brantford P.L., Ont. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Hope a Vol. 2 of this book comes!

I read this book before I went backpacking to Europe and it made me aware that anything could happen on my journey. As I was traveling I even ended up at certain locations where some of the stories took place! Now that I am home, Ive read the book again and just laughed at how true some of the stories are about certain countries. Its a must read!
