All Music Guide - Kurt Keefner

The tracks are not dated but appear to go back to about the early '50s, with Celia Cruz singing the title track. From just a few years later, Pérez Prado's "Que Rico Mamo" sounds deliciously like something Henry Mancini would have borrowed from for one of his TV show themes. Some of the tracks are disco-influenced: "Mr. Loco" is just what the title says -- loco -- more exactly, goofy. The selection is a real mix: Celia Cruz's "Guantanamera" is, of course, a classic; other stuff, like the disco, is quite ephemeral. The collection's variety is limited by some of the artists being featured multiple times: Celia Cruz and Orlando Contreras each appear four times out of a total of 30 tracks. Definitely worth a listen.
