Overview

A new season approaches. . . .

Now that Kallik and Yakone have decided to join Toklo and Lusa on the rest of their journey home, the four bears head toward warmer territories. Spring is coming, and Toklo and Lusa are overjoyed to be away from the ice, surrounded by green forests and flowing rivers once again.

But the forest brings unique challenges for the polar bears, Kallik and Yakone. As they struggle to continue on, they know that each step is taking them farther from the ice. Have they made a mistake, straying from their natural home?

Soon Toklo also grows desperate to leave the struggles of their journey behind. As the group pushes toward the mountains where brown bears roam, Toklo must decide whether to see the quest through to the end . . . or to start a new life on his own.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Katie Ashley
In the third book of the “Seekers” series, two new bears have joined the quest for a new home. Green grass, lively forests and flowing rivers show promise for Lusa and Toklo, who are looking forward to being closer to home. But with the thrill of hope for a new home, unique challenges present themselves to each bear. Unfamiliar terrain and encounters with enemy bears lower the morale of the pack as they continue their trek. The two polar bears Kallik and Yokone wonder if they have made a mistake as they travel farther away from their home on the ice. Lusa wonders what will become of her once Toklo finds his own home. Toklo considers if the responsibility of the group is worth the burden or if he should continue alone, facing the dangers of new territories without the comfort and protection of his pack. Each chapter is titled after one of the four names of the bears, seeming to be told in that character’s point of view. However, the point of view remains in third person omniscient; each chapter merely focuses more on the character whose name it bears. Hunter’s complex language will challenge young readers: words like “pangs” and “swathe,” as well as creative references like calling humans “flat-faces,” make the scenes of conflict come alive; the action keeps readers on the edge of their seats. This book would be ideal for students who enjoy animal realism stories and look for a sense of adventure. Reviewer: Katie Ashley; Ages 8 to 12.
