VOYA
The Civil War is certainly one of the most important periods in the history of the United States, and its complexity also makes it one of the most difficult subjects to teach in the middle school classroom. This series from Lerner, "The Civil War", breaks down the American Civil War into six simple and easy-to-read volumes that cover all aspects of this tragic conflict for readers of that age group. In River to Victory, the authors focus the reader's attention on the early years of the war out West through the capture of key Confederate strongholds, Forts Henry and Donelson, which opened the Mississippi River to Union gunboats and ironclads; the Battle of Shiloh, where near-disaster turned into a Union victory; and the siege on Vicksburg. Ulysses S. Grant's successes and failures are broken into simple and direct language. Books in this series are filled to the brim with photos and illustrations, helping the reader understand the text. Each volume pulls key figures from the text and puts the spotlight on them, giving a brief but informative biography of each. They do the same with key terms, helping the reader along without clouding the treatment with too much trivial information. A time line ends each volume as a quick reference guide to help put all the dates into perspective. A section called For More Information lists books, videos, Web sites, and places to visit for the student looking to dig deeper into the American Civil War. As a whole, this set, which also includes Life Goes On: The Civil War at Home, 1861-1865 and Lost Cause: The End of the Civil War, 1864-1865 among other titles, is marvelous and belongs in every school library. Gr 5-8-Students will be drawn to these colorful, attractive books that feature a photograph, painting, map, chart, or information box on every page. The balanced, six-chapter texts tell of battles, generals, and casualties in a straightforward manner, with no new interpretations. The volumes begin with "Words You Need to Know," but there are also definitions of terms throughout the texts. Each title has an introduction and an informative concluding section: "What Happened to Them after the War?" (Lost Cause), "A Civil War Army" (Richmond), and "A Civil War Navy" (Victory). The bibliographies list titles by noted Civil War historians. These well-organized books are welcome additions to Civil War collections.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt.
