Overview

Followers of the Irish step-dancing extravaganza who haven't seen its Broadway incarnation will be surprised by the multicultural event that is RIVERDANCE ON BROADWAY. But fans of furious footwork will hail this explosive show, which takes steps toward global inclusiveness by bringing dancers from Spain, Russia, Nova Scotia, the Balkans, and Africa into the mix. Once again, Irish music impresario Bill Whelan is at the helm, crafting a high-energy hybrid of traditional Irish songs and Broadway razzmatazz. But this time, he's aided by the powerful voice of Tsidii Le Loka, the South African vocalist who wowed Broadway-goers as Rafiki in THE LION KING. Arranging and conducting the Amanzi Singers on "Limpopo," "Let Freedom Ring," and "Amanzi," Le Loka is hands-down the most dynamic new inclusion to the RIVERDANCE phenomenon. Whelan, who has written six new songs for this production, celebrates diversity -- with performances from Russian whirling dervishes and Spanish flamenco dancers -- while stressing the interconnectedness of the world's peoples. "Endless Journey," the finale, points this out in its catalogue of rivers, from Ireland's Liffey to the Amazon, the Nile, and even the Chattahoochee. Featured singer Brian Kennedy manages these tongue twisters and more. He's joined by RIVERDANCE veterans Eileen Ivers on fiddle and the Lord of the Dance himself, Michael Flatley, who contributes rousing tap solos on "Reel Around the Sun" and "The Countess Cathleen," proving once and for all that you don't have to be Irish to love RIVERDANCE ON BROADWAY.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
As the title suggests, Riverdance On Broadway takes Bill Whelan's phenomenally popular Celtic dance revue to the Great White Way, keeping some of the show's best-loved music and adding some new songs and influences. Favorites such as "Reel Around the Sun," "The Countess Cathleen," "Firedance," and "Lift the Wings" return, joined by new compositions like "Amanzi," "Ri Ra," and "Endless Journey," which add flamenco guitars and other Mediterranean touches. Brian Kennedy and Tsidii La Loka are among the featured vocalists on this original cast recording, which will please fans of the first Riverdance as well as those discovering its newest incarnation.
