Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
If water covers more than 70% of our earth's surface, as scientists tell us, then it is understandable that we would need to know all we can know about water and how it helps us. Water provides for our nutritional needs not only as drinking water, but as irrigation for agricultural uses. Water provides recreation as well as electrical power. Great sources of water like rivers and lakes can actually change the landscape as we know it. The force of water can cut through rock, destroy cities, and change the outlines of mountains and coastlines. In this small book, part of "The Restless Earth" series, the reader will explore different bodies of water, how water can move from one body to a larger or smaller body of water, and what happens when water reaches the ocean. There are beautiful images throughout the book, making use of photographs, satellite imagery, and diagrams. Insets throughout the text present additional information about such topics as beach sand, mining the ocean floor, and shrinking lakes. Supplemental pages include an index, a glossary, a bibliography, and suggestions for further reading. Websites and print media are included in the reading list. The other five subjects covered in this series are earthquakes and volcanoes, fossils, layers of the earth, mountains and valleys, and rocks and minerals. This is an exceptionally well presented title and will be a good choice for science teachers as well as media specialists of children in this age bracket. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
