Overview

Twenty-six year old Adam Runner is an English teacher and head varsity boys' basketball coach at a small high school. Popular and successful as a coach and teacher, his emotional life away from school is in shambles. Distraught over the deaths of his girlfriend and then his entire family in separate automobile accidents less than a year apart, he blames himself for certain circumstances he believes could have prevented the tragedies.

But everything changes when he meets Glory, a senior cheerleader for a school that will be playing against his Dickson High Devil Dog team. And so begins an inexplicable attraction that captivates them both and causes Runner to reconsider his vow not to allow for new relationships.

A winter storm, an escaped prisoner from a nearby Federal Penitentiary, and the accidental shooting of Runner's best friend, Chief of Police Ben Stoddard, by a crazed FBI agent, along with his growing infatuation for a girl he knows nothing about, divides Runner's attention away from a basketball game that has been dubbed by the media as 'The Game of the Decade,' involving two undefeated and number-one ranked teams from different states.

Road to Glory is a love story, impossible and unrealizable, but where there is a will, they say...

I just finished reading, "ROAD TO GLORY". I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am a sports enthusiast, a romantic, and I love mysteries, so Mr. Hughes captured me from the very beginning. This book was hard for me to put it down for the night. I will now begin his second novel, 'MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP". I am looking forward to reading this one, as well as his newest novel when it is published, "THE VELVET STONE". I think I will be a fan of Mr. Hughes' writing forever.

Coach Hughes was my high school basketball coach from 1969 to 1971, very early in his career. He has a written an outstanding novel in "Road to Glory". My wife has also read the book. We both agree that this is one of the most thought-provoking, insightful and interesting booksl to come along in a long time. To Be able to weave together a sports theme with a romance and a mystery is almost unheard of, yet it is superbly done. Part two "Miles To Go Before I Sleep" will be out in September, 2013. We have both read an advance copy and it is even better than the first. This is a 5 star book that is destined to be a terrific movie some day soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story provides an interesting contrast between the control required for athletic achievement and the surrender required in love. I found myself as engrossed in the Midwest Game of the Decade as the romantic plot. Mr. Hughes reeled me in and left me wanting more.

Here is a book that I recommend for all to read. It is a love story, action story and a sports, (basketball) story. I understand it is the 1st of a two part story and I cannot wait for the 2nd book to come out. I actually read this book three times and every time I found another highlight to be excited about. I believe Mr. Hughes has something special in his writing talents and will be looking forward to his books in the future.
