Overview

Come to the construction site and try your hand at operating the big machines with the help of amazing pop-ups, pull-out play pieces, and plenty more.

When is a pop-up book not a pop-up book? When it’s also a play space, promising hours of fun! Master paper engineer Robert Crowther has outdone himself with this celebration of captivating machines, each commanding its own space: a dump truck, bulldozer, tractor, forklift, and tower crane. Included on each spread:
* One giant pop-up machine with movable parts (and some smaller machines, too)
* A fascinating description of what the machine is and what it can do
* A fact file of cool details such as measurements and weights
* A pouch containing pull-out, easy-to-construct items such as boxes and bricks
* Tips on how to work the big machine — and get busy playing! (Sound effects to be happily provided by users.)

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The movers and shakers in this colorful pop-up include a tractor, forklift, and tower crane. Side panels open to reveal photographs of machines in action and additional information about how they operate. Readers can manipulate moving parts on the pop-ups: via pull-tab, a bulldozer's blade scoots forward, and paper objects contained in a side pocket (boulders, planks) can be loaded into the back of a dump truck. Some of the interactive effects fall a little short--attaching paper tools and trailers to the back of a tractor may be difficult for little fingers--but truck and other rig enthusiasts should be captivated. Ages 4–up. (Nov.)

Five good-sized, some as tall as fifteen inches, machines pop up from the double pages, each with some part that can be manipulated for more action. Flaps open for additional information, and sometimes another small pop-up. Photographs are included of actual machines. On the bulldozer pages is a list of other road building machines. Farm machines are added to the tractor that rises on the next double page. In a pocket there are tools and trailers to be assembled and attached to the tractor as it is pulled along. On the forklift pages are also facts on other factory machines. Here in a pocket are a box and pallet to assemble and raise and lower on the forklift. Next comes a dump truck, with a wide assortment of materials in a pocket to be loaded on and dumped from the truck. Finally, in a pocket, there is a concrete block to be hooked onto a tower crane and hauled up along with a small book with more building machines. Many fact files are also included on the pages. Crowther has illustrated the realistic machines in minimal settings in gouache and collage. The pop-ups function smoothly, but this is not a book that can be circulated in a library because of the many loose parts to be assembled. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Kirkus Reviews
A young machine-crazy boy's ultimate pop-up for as long as it lasts. Five machines—bulldozer, tractor, forklift, dump truck and tower crane—successively leap forth, one to a spread. Each is glossed with a few simply written paragraphs and summarized in a "Fact File." The machines are rendered in loving detail against appropriate environmental backgrounds and are provided with removable paper props for children to play with: a furrow press for the tractor, a box for the forklift and so on. While this notion is undeniably cool, it also compromises the longevity of the whole, as both removable pieces and pop-ups are of flimsy-enough stock that trying to make the parts fit together and work will likely damage them. It's also a shame that most of the figures depicted are white men. Pretty nifty in concept, a little weak in execution. (Pop-up nonfiction. 4-7)

    Amazing Indeed!!!

I purchased this book as a gift for my grandson Sammy who LOVES anything that has to do with transportation and construction. I spent a bit of time looking thru this book and I know that Sammy will LOVE it. The pop-ups are incredible and along with the little pouches of extra's this book will bring hours of fun for Sammy. If you know a child or adult who like pop-up books then any one of this author's books would make a perfect gift. My next purchase will be "Amazing Pop-Up Trucks" and I'm sure it won't stop there Kudos to Robert Crowther and his fabulous artistry.
