Robert de la Salle

Overview

La Salle is one of the best-known but least-understood explorers of human history. Celebrated for following the Mississippi to its mouth in present-day Louisiana, he was also berated for failing to locate that same area when he came by sea. Justly known as the greatest of the canoe-carrying and paddle-wielding Frenchmen of his time, he was a failure when it came to colonization and conquest.

There was greatness within him, including a powerful will to succeed, but there also was sheer stubbornness, which cost him when he attempted to create a French colony in what is now Texas. In Robert de La Salle, read about a man whose journeys encouraged explorers from other European nations to survey the southeastern United States.

Great Explorers tells the stories of some of the world's most influential figures whose quest for gold, land, and knowledge changed the course of history and created the modern globe. These books are a key resource to help students understand the stages of European exploration amid international rivalries.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up–The information in this series on well-known and oft-written-about explorers is not necessarily new but it is presented in such a way as to attract and maintain readers' interest. Each title opens with a glimpse into a particularly thrilling or critical moment in the man's life, and then the chapters unfold chronologically. The explorers' triumphs and foibles are described in keen detail, with the common factors in their stories being the descriptions of the subjects' unending desire to see the world, do something no one else had done, and their unfailing determination. With a full complement of maps, photographs (where available), illustrations, time lines, and document reproductions, a full story is told. Well-written and thoroughly researched, this series will make a solid addition.
